Internet Archive: Wayback Machine – The Web Then and Now

Internet Archive: Wayback Machine – I wonder what the Web looked like 5 years ago. Can you even remember? If you try to by memory, prepare yourself for futility; technological advancements of the Internet happened and still occur today so fast and seamlessly, the entire Web feels like an organic creature that is growing before our very eyes.

Thankfully we have the Wayback Machine, an archive project by archive.org, which lets you see what web pages looked like, beginning from 1996 and up until a few months ago. Although the most interesting websites are conveniently blocked (try looking up Facebook or Twitter for example), or only partially represented in the archive, here are two fun examples:

allmyfaves.com. December 2006:

CNN.com, Feb 2003:

Looks funny, doesn’t it? Let the fun linger on with the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine.

Give it a try yourself and look for the old pages of your favorite website. Simply type in the url in the search box and hit the “Take Me Back” button. Let the magic begin…

That’s My Boss – Unfit Manager Stories Revealed

That’s My Boss – “United we stand against the tyranny of those who make us work weekends, put in extra hours, take work calls over holiday breaks, and question our use of vacation days…when they’re our damn vacation days!” –this strong outcry alone made me curious. Reading further the About page of That’s My Boss reveals the team’s solid manifesto: “So keep your ears and eyes open, record the hypocrisy of your workplace…of your bosses, department heads, and anyone else who tells you to fill out a TPS Report in triplicate. This is your chance for revenge.”

Each post is a true story, submitted by anonymous (and utterly frustrated) employees across the country, rightly venting out their miserable circumstances at work caused by unfit managers. See the post below, The REM Cycle which made me laugh. Another good one is A Cigarette Earned. By the way, That’s My Boss is also a Weekly Blog winner, so give it a nice round of applause please!

false.jp – Random Screens

false.jp – All I’m going to say about this site is that it’s very similar to the various Chrome experiments circulating the Web every now and then. I have provided two screen shots below, but if you hover your mouse over the upper left portion of your screen, you’ll get many more awesome options to explore. Enjoy!

Especially Happy Holidays,

Quotista – Sharing Power Quotes

Quotista – This quotes site is all about collecting and sharing quotes (Facebook and Twitter). All entries on Quotista are submitted by users who were impressed by a sentence, a phrase or an excerpt of a book they have read. The site is simply designed, but that does not mean it lacks elegance and efficency. Although Quotista is here to do one thing only, it does it beautifully.

Here are a few examples of the quotes I’ve found on the site’s Popular Quotes section. My favorite quote is the very first one here in the list:

eBay Group Gifts – The Pefect Fail-Proof Group Purchase

eBay Group Gifts – Imagine a close friend of yours moves into a new house and you really want to give him a housewarming gift that stands out, like a cool set of rock speakers for his new deck outside. The only thing is, these speakers can cost more than you can afford at the moment. One option would be to do a group purchase with some of your mutual buddies, where one person actually buys the gift online, and the others pay him back later. Well, eBay’s Group Gifts feature takes this basic purchase option and makes it better, super easy and fun.

Simply go to the Group Gifts main page, type in the name of the gift’s recipient and the occasion (you can also pick the friend’s name straight from your Facebook friends list). Next, search for a gift and pick one, just make sure it’s from the ‘Buy it Now’ section (see photo below), and select your contribution’s amount to the gift’s overall price. The following step includes providing an active PayPal account where you and all the other buddies pitching in can make your respective contribution. This cool feature includes setting a time limit, which totally eliminates the entire issue of reminding your friends to pay you back !

Once the payment portion is done, eBay will send the gift to the recipient and voila, he’ll have to figure out where exactly he’d like to position those rock-like speakers. For more information on eBay’s amazing new group purchase feature, see the video below. We loved the Group Gift option , especially for the holidays!

ThinkGeek – The Nerdy Mall is Super Cool

ThinkGeek – We don’t normally feature an e-commerce site in the Weekly Faves lineup, but ThinkGeek is most certainly an exception. This website represents what every man secretly desires, but is too afraid to admit it. Aside from cool t-shirts like this one, ThinkGeek offers cool stuff for the home, the office, pets, kitchen, computer and electronics, and loads more. The two photos below are my absolute favorites.

MapCrunch – Sweet Manipulation of Google Street Views

MapCrunch – Google is the undisputed expert when it comes to maps and street view. We already know that. And here is a nice website that uses Google’s wonderful geo-visualizations to create an exciting platform for exploring the world’s mainstream as well as less obvious locations.

MapCrunch neatly presents the world to you in various options to choose from: either hop from one location to the next at random (simply click on Go!), or choose a more specified location (by selecting continent or country). This site is simple and entertaining, which is why we loved it so much. By the way, if you’re wondering why some European countries are saying no to Google Street View, check out the MapCrunch’s sidekick site, StreetViewFunny.com and you’ll see why.

Trivial Pursuit’s YouTube Channel – Don’t Let the House Win

Trivial Pursuit’s YouTube Channel – Entertainment galore with a hint of the gambling craze is what you’ll find here on Trivia Pursuit’s YouTube Channel. In this fun trivia game you are betting on YouTube to get questions right or wrong. Getting them right scores you chips. Win the house and claim the glory! But the question is, how well-rounded is your knowledge? Try it and find out…

Paul Frank Planned Pines – Beautifully Designed Monkey Business

Paul Frank Planned Pines – What happens when a brand wants to reach out to the online community? It launches an interactive and fun campaign that includes a myriad of content and information for users to engage in. That is what Paul Frank Industry, the super cute fashion accessories company has created in order to reach out to larger audiences online.

The Paul Frank Planned Pines is a fun place for people of all ages, and you’re bound to find something here to keep you busy. Some of the attractions you will find on Planned Pines include the Galaxy Theater, featuring a number of “Julius and Friends” cartoons; the Fun Zone with its beautifully designed arcade games; the Museum’s Art Gallery (showing users’ versions of the brand’s trademark monkey character); and a Rec Center where users create their version of Paul Frank that is later added to the Art Gallery (see my creation below).

Planned Pines is a bundle of cartoon joy. By the way, this campaign is a finalist in the nomination for the 2010 Pixel Award in the Animation category, which totally makes sense. Congrats, Paul Frank Industry!

Experts of the funny “Starring You” videos and photos, JibJab outdid themselves this year, with numerous Halloween e-Cards including your special appearance you can share with friends and family – all funny as hell.

Google Demo Slam – Happy Google Users Share the Love

Google Demo Slam – Here’s yet another proof that Google is so different from any other corporate in history; they created an amazing platform for all the people around the world who want to show how creative they can get with using Google products. Each week, the Google Demo Slam will display two videos of individuals and groups of people who took a Google product or service to the next level. Users watch the two videos, choose the best one, and these votes determine the winner of that week’s demo slam.

This week both videos are creative and inspiring, but only one will be the winner. My personal favorite is shown below. Create your own Demo Slam with your friends, and maybe you will make it to the slam as well!
