DECOmyplace – By showcasing real living places tastefully designed by ‘regular people,’ DECOmyplace is an interior design hub dedicated to presenting and sharing design ideas.
While this exquisite site is very popular in Taiwan, the interior design ideas you will find here are universally appreciated. Browse by room type (kitchen, bedroom, office and more), by furnishing (lighting, painting, plants, tableware, etc.) or styles (before/after, retro, vintage and so on). In short, DECOmyplace is a wonderful celebration of interior design, and everyone’s invited to contribute. Want to share your living space? Sign in and upload. Here are a couple of my favorites.
LivingSocial – Groupon is probably one of the most talked about websites this year, and for a good reason. The group deals niche is growing at an exponential rate, and keeps drawing more and more participants as time goes by. LivingSocial is another promising Groupon-like site that aims to offer rewarding deals in American, Canadian, even Australian cities, while boosting local businesses.
Sign up by providing your email address and picking your city, and get a daily offer of something cool to do in your city. What I like about LivingSocial is their Escapes feature, which offers affordable weekend getaways and short vacations across the US and Canada. I’m already subscribed. What are you waiting for?
BookLending – Love your Kindle? I bet you love reading then. If you do, BookLending is for you. Explore the ebook borrowing and lending service at BookLending (by Amazon), which matches those willing to lend purchased titles to those looking for fresh reads and vice versa.
Sign up to BookLending, and once you get our own profile page you can review, make and offer loans from there. To lend a book, click on the big green button (see above) and the intuitive BookLending system will direct you how to proceed. By the way, you don’t necessarily have to own a Kindle to receive a book loan. You can use this service with your PC, Mac, iPhone, Blackberry and other devices as well. For more info on how BookLending works and how to use it, go to the FAQ page.
Loviu – This innovative T-Shirts store offers users – designers and simple T-shirt wearers alike- the chance to actively influence what people are wearing: “now you have a chance to decide what people will wear tomorrow and make some nice cash along the way.”
Aside from voting for tee designs you love (highest scoring designs result in some serious Euro cash for winning designers!) and submitting your own design, you can earn sweet cash by allowing Loviu to advertise the daily tee on your Facebook profile page.
Here are a couple of designs I immediately craved for myself, but sadly shopping is no longer possible; you can only vote for these:
Going – Find cool things to do, see and discover in your city with Going, a one-stop place for cool attractions suiting your going out cup of tea (or beer). Although the beta version of Going starts off with NYC as the default location, there are 30 US cities to choose from.
The great part about Going is that you can search for fun things to do by checking activities and events’ popularity (what people like the most) so you don’t have to start wondering if a certain event is as promising as it seems or if it’s a flop. In addition, the Going platform allows you to meet new people seeking the same activities you are looking for, hence putting together people with the same areas of interest.
Other Going perks include popular places, Going deals (for members only), top searches, browsing by categories (nightlife, music, culture and more), and there’s even a mobile app that comes in handy when you’re out in the street looking for something fun to do. Going will show you what it really means to make the most out of what your city has to offer!
FoldingStory – Remember that fragmented storytelling we used to play as kids in school where one kid would begin with a sentence and each subsequent participants would add another part? I loved it because there was always a surprising turn to the story, usually a funny one. FoldingStory is based upon the same group storytelling concept, only the group is all users out there. To enter your ‘fold,’ sign up.
To help you get started, FoldingStory recommends visiting the help page, or checking out a few of the finished stories before you begin. This is my favorite – group collaboration at its finest!
RunKeeper – Since the iPhone and Android came out, workouts have never been so easy to track, measure and plan ahead. Although RunKeeper is not the first fitness app to facilitate fitness activities and reaching workout goals, this software is an amazing tool all runners and gym fans will surely appreciate, particularly since RunKeeper’s mobile app is free.
You can upload past workouts and provide all the relevant details from memory or, from your Polar device (duration, calories, distance, heart rate and more), or track your activities in real-time using your mobile device (app features GPS tracking, audio interval cues, iPod integration, social network sharing). Click the image below to get to the mobile app download page – it’s free! In addition to the mobile app, make use of RunKeeper’s Fitness Classes, which will put you on your path to several running goals (5K, 10K runs, half a marathon, a whole marathon, or a weight-loss track).

Gogobot – The best trip tips I get when I travel come not necessarily from travel guides like TripAdvisor and the like, but from friends who had already been to my desired destination. Gogobot is built upon the same concept, offering a network of friends who share the best travel tips with the rest of the community, based upon ‘actually been there’ experiences. These tips are then combined with photos and maps to build the ultimate travel guide for you, according on your preferences.
To see the wonders of Gogobot, log in with your facebook account and explore Destinations, or type in any other location and hit Plan a Trip. You can either seek advice or share yours with the community. To see an example, check out this travel profile for San Diego. To learn more on Gogobot, watch the video below.
Simplenote – This handy tool by Simplenote is a great (and free!) organizational service you will appreciate. Aside from the obvious note keeping, you can share notes and lists with friends and family, and access all of these on multiple devices -including PC, Mac and most smartphones- that are automatically updated with any changes you or others make to these notes.
Managing your notes and lists is super easy and fun. I gave it a try on my iPhone, and here are the Simplenote perks I loved: you can see each entry’s word and character count, which is useful if you wish to share it via web or phone, you can pin specific items to the top if priorities sudden change, and you can view each list/note in full screen mode. Simplenote is super versatile in terms of operating devices and publishing options. If you’re not a big mobile device fan, it’s good to know you can always use their Web app.
GroupMe – This service is essentially a group chat room that’s been modified to text messaging mode. It works with every cell phone that supports texting, so you don’t need a fancy iPhone or any other smart phone to use GroupMe (although iPhone and Android users have the GroupMe app available). You can create multiple groups while each network receives a designated number you will use for texting its members (sending and receiving). Some classic group categories I can think of are friends, colleagues, family, carpool group, etc.The possibilities are endless.
For quick GroupMe actions (i.e. key shortcuts), read this help section. Although there’s no limit to the number of groups you can create and be part of, GroupMe recommends keeping an ideal number of 4-10 members in each group. Apparently a higher number leads to clutter and noise, which makes sense. So what other functions are available on GroupMe? Aside from sending text, you can share photos with your group and make conference calls. Oh, and using GroupMe is free by the way. The only downside to this service is that it’s available only in the US for now. The GroupMe team says it’s working on making it available in other countries as well. Let’s hope that happens sooner rather than later.
Fashism – Ladies, we’ve all been there before. We put on a new dress, pants or top. We turn to our girlfriend or boyfriend/husband, asking “how do I look?” If a far too considerate, sugar-coated answer is what you’re getting instead of an honest response, Fashism is your solution. Founded by fashion columnist Brooke Moreland, and cleverly marketed by Ashley Granata, Fashism is here to give you a sincere feedback on your look or newly purchased apparel item.
Simply upload an image (you can do so via iPhone as well), and let the community have its say through ratings and comments. Although signing up to Fashism is extremely rewarding, you do not necessarily have to be a registered user to upload pics and get feedback on your look. Having an account though can earn you points which can bring you discounts and special offers, so why not register? Here are a couple of great looks I found here on Fashism.
