Thrill of the Catch – Gone Fishing (and Learning While I’m There)

Thrill of the Catch – This amazing game by Discovery Education and TakeMeFishing.Org lets you play on both sides of the fishing game; you can feed your fish of choice, choose its colurs, pick out a name for it, and feed it with its favorite food. Or, you could practice your fishing skills by trying to catch as many fish as possible. This is a lot of fun, and I’ve included two pics to lure you to sea. Don’t forget though: once you catch a fish, pat yourself on the back and throw it back to the water.

TuneCrank – Getting Bands out of the Basement and on the Web

TuneCrank – Do you have a band and think it’s time to stop rehearsing in your parents’ garage and expose your music to the world? Check out TuneCrack, a free service that helps independent musicians and artists to reach audiences online.

TuneCrank “finds, ranks and streams the best independent music out there for the whole world to hear.” Visitors can listen to each uploaded track and rank it (you can choose between ‘awesome’ – the hand gesture for rock, thumbs up or thumbs down). In addition, you can see each track’s play count, and if you click the plus sign to the right of each track box, you will see how users have ranked this song thus far. I played some tunes here on TuneCrank and I loved it. See the site’s current #1 song, Sweet On You by Johnny’s Body.

Genero.tv – Creating Music Videos for Top Artists

Genero.tv – Feel like making the music video of your favorite artist? Now you can with Genero.tv. a site that picks the songs from artists around the world and then leaves it up to you to make your own music videos for them to express what the songs represent for you. This innovative and creative idea brings together grade A artists (including Royskopp, Moby, David Lynch, Alicia Keys) with video creators to make the best music videos ever. Winning videos score fame and great prizes, so if you know your way around the creative video world, genero.tv is the place for you. To get an idea of the artists listed here who are waiting for cool videos see the screen shot below.

To see an example of genero.tv in action, see this video by thespecialbobo , a finalist for Alicia Keys’ Wait Till You See My Smile song (apologies for not embedding the video, the code failed to work).

We Dance to the Beat – Robyn Asks “What’s Yours?”

Robyn – Are you familiar with this Swedish recording artist, singer and songwriter? I admit I wasn’t familiar with Robyn, but her beat mixing platform We Dance to the Beat made me curious and entertained. Although this beat blender might be annoying to some in terms of sound, I found it to be a unique and creative experience. Make your personalized dance to the beat track by adding/removing sounds as you go along, and share the end result with your social network.

We Dance to the Beat is beautifully designed, and for those of you choosing to explore Robyn’s music project, I say turn up the volume and enjoy it.

InTheMo – Video-Based Recommendations for Your City’s Cool Spots

InTheMo – This smart video-based recommendation guide claims to be “the first worldwide city guide that learns what you like.” Basically the InTheMo system ‘learns’ what you’re into by keeping track of your clicks in the site, and suggesting city spots that suit your taste and preferences.

The concept behind InTheMo is creating a community of ‘local experts’ who define and share the location of cool spots worldwide (covering 576 cities in 16 different countries). How do videos fit in exactly? Well, according to InTheMo’s press release from Nov 22, 2010, “the site uses documentary style video to share the stories and personalities behind these businesses” (PR Newswire). To start exploring the video recommendations at InTheMo, I suggest diving into the Best Of Lists -most recommended spots- and be sure to pick your city (right under the InTheMo logo on the top left). Now let the video fun begin; click Videos and see InTheMo’s visual guide in action.

In order for the InTheMo system to learn more about the activities and attractions you are likely to love, sign in (I used my Facebook account for that), pick your city and start ‘Recing’ your favorite city spots (as in Rec for recommendation), while specifying the degree of interest in percentages, from 50% to 100%. Picking 15 Recs is a good starting point for InTheMo’s system to know what other spots it can recommend you. InTheMo is a fun and interesting service worth checking out. Here’s a screen shot of the Rec It options I chose from.

Uwall.tv – The Colorful Wall of Music

Uwall.tv – What an original approach to music consumption and discovery! Uwall.tv’s homepage is amazing in and of itself -see the screen shot below. Simply pick an artist or band from the hundreds of thmbnail images on the page, or simply type in your artist of choice into the search box.

I couldn’t find my favorite, Nina Simone on the Uwall.tv homepage, so I used the search box and voila, here’s what happened (see below). It’s an instant mini player, showing the top music videos of Nina – YouTube videos of all her top hits. The Uwall.tv service is simple, extremely rewarding and beautiful to look at. Sounds like a classic Weekly Fave.

Instants – 72 Sound Buttons for Every Occasion

Instants – This Spanish site is a huge bundle of sound joy, offering 72 different buttons where each makes a specific sound that is hilarious in its own right. To give you an example, if I were to tell a joke to a friend and he wouldn’t get it, I’d click the ‘crickets’ button to get out of that uncomfortable silence with style. Other buttons I can’t wait to use are Hallelujah, Muppets, Omnom!, or the vulgar yet equally entertaining Shut Up button. This site is all about laughs and making fun of yourself and others (if you wish of course). The screen shot below shows only the first three rows.

Audioboo – Audio Tweets with Added Perks

Audioboo – This UK based company offers a terrific service allowing users to “record audio while on the move and add as much useful data to it as possible, such as photos, tags and location.” Although the Audioboo service’s full fledged benefits are ideal for mobile (currently offering an app for iPhone and Android), a PC interface is also available which allows you to both listen to and upload ‘boos’ as they call it.

What I found particularly interesting is the sharing aspect of Audioboo; you can follow or be followed via RSS subscriptions and iTunes’ podcast option. Sharing and following has become a must in practically every content producing website these days, and Audioboo has made great use of it. I recommend exploring Audioboo’s Channels selection (most are radio stations) as these offer intriguing discussions in various areas of interest. My current favorite ‘boo’ is the BBC London Channel. To learn more about Audioboo see the introduction video below.
