One in 8 Million – The Urban Dictionary has 16 definitions for the term “New Yorker” (warning: some are offensive). Half of the definitions here define a New Yorker in a positive light, as “Someone who has guts, brains, good looks, and the right attitude. Someone who is able to live in the greatest city on the face of the planet, in the center of the world, and enjoy it.” The other half on the other hand is less appreciative, including this one: “A New Yorker is an arrogant, primitive, money/pleasure-obsessed individual; irritable, angry and nasty type. A personality who doesn’t give a damn about others and only cares for his/her own well-fare.” I used to live in New York once and my personal definition for a New Yorker is this one: each New Yorker carries his or her own unique story, a very interesting story.
One in 8 Million (brought to us by the New York Times) has recognized this diverse individuality throughout the metropolis’ five boroughs, and has created a well designed website featuring stories of different New Yorkers. Each story is presented by an audio recording, accompanied by photos. I haven’t listened to all of them, but from the ones I have, I especially enjoyed Jesse Popp: The Struggling Stand-Up, Joshua Febres: The Uncertain Gang Member and Lolita Wolf: The Kinky Lover.
The Bread Art Project – Creating art for the benefit of charity organizations isn’t a new trend, but this particular project by the Grain Foods Foundation gives it a whole new meaning. The Bread Art project is magnificently simple: creating unique works of art on virtual pieces of bread, selling them in galleries and channeling the produced profits to programs that aim to end childhood hunger in America.
According to the Info section on the website, the Grain Foods Foundation “will donate $50,000 to Share Our Strength [charity organization] and will make an additional $1 donation for every piece of Bread Art submitted and approved, up to a maximum donation of $100,000, now through June 30, 2010.” Visit the project’s galleries to marvel the Bread Art users all over have already created, and be inspired to make your own. See the one I created below…
Cretique – Cretique is an inspiring place, a “daily updated blog committed to exhibiting the best works in Graphic Design, Photography, Fine Arts, Tech Gear, Style, Entertainment, Web Design, Illustration, Architecture, Film, Motion Graphics, Music Videos and more.” As you can see, it has something for everyone. I especially enjoyed 50 Incredible Digitally Restored Vintage Asian Ads, FedEx and Why Not? For more inspiring design blogs visit our Design page.
Bad Birds – Help the mischievous birds succeed in their escape from a maximum security prison by tasking each jailboard to dig, float and build like lemmings.

Pixel Basher – A remix of the classic Breakout gameplay. This time break apart retro block characters.
Otomaco – Three travelers are searching for the legendary city of Otomaco. Each of them wants to find a different treasure. The Ork Gheri dreams about Otaxi, the magic shield. The monk, Zeng, is looking for the lost papyrus from the god Olitec’s temple. The Elf Elanti has not revealed what he is seeking…perhaps you can find out.
Atomic Puzzle – In this tricky flash puzzle game Atomic Puzzle, you will need to remove specific atoms from the molecule in order to merge all the same-coloured atoms.
Robo Blast – A very addictive game, with tons of actions. If you like shooting, dodging, upgrading and pwning tons of enemies , you will love this game.
Maya Blocks – Collapse the Mayan Blocks below the line so that the spirits are pleased.
Enough Plumbers – You control a blue plumber whose only goal is to reach the flag. Wait! Did I say one plumber? Collecting coins in this game will create clones of your plumber, so there will be tons of them to be controlled during each level.
Power Bike – Rev up the handle-bars of your dirtbike and power your way through all levels in this awesome biking game.
Dummy Never Fails – Launch crash dummies with a cannon and try to hit the target in each level without causing the dummy too much pain.
Droplets – Droplets is a very cute retro platform skill game. Just try to get your critters down the screen safely.
Birdy Blocks – Destroy groups of 3 or more by grouping them, mainly for kids, or people who want a nice high score.
Autodesk Homestyler – Feeling the urge for redesigning your living room, kitchen or entire home? Hiring the services of an interior designer or architect is what you’d imagine will do the job, right? Not necessarily; thanks to the Web, you can do it all by yourself. Autodesk Homestyler is a great starting point for exactly such DIY projects. It takes into consideration that “interior design and home remodeling projects involve a lot of details and expensive choices. Autodesk Homestyler helps you jumpstart your home improvement project by making 2D and 3D home design easy enough for anyone. It’s free, completely web-based, and instantly accessible online.”
This amazing interactive tool is very easy to use and is extremely intuitive. Nevertheless, if you don’t really feel like putting the designer hat on, you can always check out the gallery section of the site, which has many ready-made designs you can choose from and be inspired by. Good luck and have fun!
Kitteh Roulette – You have probably heard of Chat Roulette and all the hype around it – it’s a website that offers you a random person to chat with via your webcam. Cool idea, isn’t it? What a shame that too many people are exploiting this terrific service (excessive nudity). But don’t worry! Kitteh Roulette is 100% safe, and is a delectable resource of random videos of cute adorable kittens and cats, each one more unique than the previous one. To see the next video of a funny or cute as hell kitten, simply click on the Next Kitten button. My favorite one is below. Meowwww!
YouTube Disco – When I first came across YouTube Disco, I was so thrilled, thinking that the online video giant had finally released a video mixing feature. But I was wrong. Big time. Turns out the YouTube Disco is simply a nice and organized way of listening to and viewing artists’ music and videos on one page. I guess the ‘mix’ or ‘disco’ aspect of this YouTube feature is manifested in the fact that you can add songs of similar (suggested) artists to the existing playlist. In addition, each artist page includes an attractive background design and a bio paragraph.
There’s no doubt YouTube is trying to push for a cool way of consuming music of our favorite performers, but I feel they should have called it something else, something more accurate and less pretentious. Despite its attractive package, YouTube Disco comes second to the standard playlist feature in my book. Nice try guys, but you’re going to have to try harder.
FutureStates – This amazing cinematic project is a compelling and engaging series of 11 short films exploring “possible future scenarios through the prism of today’s global realities.” Creators of the films on FutureStates were asked where they think the US would be in 10, 25 or even 50 years from now, in the context of today’s burning issues (including politics, the environment, civil rights and others).
Apart from offering a beautifully designed interface, FutureStates’ offered HD quality films are absolutely superb and totally worth your spare time. See my personal favorite, PIA by Tanuj Chopra, which takes place in San Francisco in the year 2063. I strongly encourage you to explore all the eleven episodes here. I think it’s an innovative way of increasing our awareness about what’s really important for the near future.
Food & Fizz – Photo-based food sites isn’t a new concept, and in fact, Food Gawker is right up there on the top of this cooking site category. The basic concept -aggregating various mouth-watering recipes on the Web in a nicely stacked list of photo thumbnails- is a great facilitator when it comes to searching for great recipes online. Food & Fizz does just that, offering a source where “people submit their beautiful food and drink pictures and we choose the best ones here daily and then they get uploaded to the site.”
Although Food & Fizz is, indeed, a wonderful cooking resource where users are invited to submit their new food finds, Food Gawker remains my personal No. 1 photo-based recipe source. Not only do they offer a clean and polished interface, but also their selection of recipes is unparalleled. At any rate, see the pics of the recipes on Food & Fizz I really enjoyed exploring.
Stories 2010 – The Unites States’ population is a diverse one, consisting of numerous nationalities, religions and traditions. We’re all familiar with the fascinating history of America that had made it the diverse nation it is today. Stories 2010 is a magnificent and captivating website which draws the various stories of different Americans into the spotlight.
The three-dimensional interface pulls you into the public space where different (actual) people give their two cents on what it is to be an American. See what urban people (Broadway) have to say, or switch to other US populations such as in the small towns (Maine St.) or rural areas (Prairie) of our great nation. Another interesting way of exploring the great (and ordinary) stories of Americans is by choosing the Portraits View. Regardless of the view options, exploring this inspiring website truly made me feel proud to be an American!
Sistine Chapel – Saying that something you did is your ‘Sistine Chapel’ is by far the best compliment you could ever get. And there’s a good reason why we use the Pope’s residence in the Vatican as an analogue to an excellent work done; the famous 12,000 square feet mural was painted by none other than the virtuous Michelangelo during the early 16th century.
The Vatican’s very own website has released a memorizing interactive platform for exploring the Sistine Chapel. The large screen view allows you to zoom in and out of and navigate through one of humanity’s most precious artistic creations. Accompanied by an A-Capella church music, watching the Sistine Chapel on your computer screen will convince you for a few minutes that you are actually right there in Rome. This is truly amazing and awe-inspiring. Enjoy!
