DailyBurn – Making use of the Web for losing weight and getting fit is becoming more and more obvious these days. There are numerous online training logs, customized fitness programs and fitness & health community networks for the like minded users. It just so happens that we have a Health & Fitness mini faves page, offering all the best diet, nutrition and fitness resources on the Web, so check it out if you’re interested.
This post however, focuses on a particular Web 2.0 training tracking/guide we feel is a shining star: DailyBurn. This new kid on the block is a comprehensive diet and fitness tracking site that has already caught the attention of major media entities such as Mashable, the New York Times, TechCrunch and others. In addition, DailyBurn’s user base of more than 300K registered trainees comes to show that this site is not only popular, but also effective. Its interface is a beautifully designed interactive platform where each user custom designs his or her training and diet program. Keeping track of your progress is easy and, to be honest, fun as well with DailyBurn’s intuitive and inviting step by step training logs.
Although the Pro plans offer many more perks and upgrades, the free subscription offers multiple training and visual tracking options to choose from. Needless to say, DailyBurn offers an iPhone app so you could keep track of your exercise on the go. Another really cool app you will find here is the FoodScanner app ($0.99) which allows you to scan product bar-codes with your iPhone cam to see the calorie amount prior to your purchase. DailyBurn, you guys rock!
The Creators Project – This amazing website is actually an innovative media portal of all things creative in our digital age. The Project’s About page describes it best: “At a time in the history of the arts where digital technologies have revolutionized distribution, democratized access, and completely re-imagined the scope and scale with which an artist can create a vision and reach an audience, The Creators Project is a completely new kind of arts and culture channel for a completely new kind of world.”
So what will you find on the Creators Project? Lots of amazing creations, designs, art works and music, all brought to you on a gorgeous interface that offers easy navigation and discovery of new artists and creations. To explore the delicious talent featured on the Creators Project, I suggest that you start with the Creators page. This is how I came to know the amazing Brazilian artist Muti Randolph (see the video below). In addition, the Creators Project will have a sizzling Launch Event this summer in NYC, on June 26. If you’re in the neighborhood this is a must stop! Soaking up the best creative talents out there feels so good. The Creators Project is nothing short of a blessing.
Broken Secrets – This site is all about learning those odd and marginal, yet totally fascinating facts about life and our planet. Don’t get me wrong; Broken Secrets is not your standard how-the-world-works kind of blog. This is a precious blog focusing on intriguing ‘secrets’ (as in hidden information you don’t know yet) of various topics, ranging from technology and science to transportation and people’s habits, just to name a few. Broken Secrets’ creator Chad produces excellent content that made me want to read all the posts he ever published here. Broken Secrets passed my blog exam with flying colors, and I strongly recommend its RSS feed option – you won’t regret it.
Broken Secrets was featured as a Weekly Blog last week on our Blogs page (each week we present 10 interesting blogs we were impressed by and felt like sharing). Since it was so popular, we decided to give it a Weekly Fave spot.
Some of the posts I enjoyed reading can be accessed by clicking on the photos below.
Appolicious – This great website, which is in association with Yahoo!, is an almost bottomless well of application resources for all possible devices currently in use, enabled with an apps option. Get the latest updates on the the new apps in town, read what users are saying about them, and what apps are in the pipeline of the Web community. Did you know there’s an iPhone application for Nursing students? Me neither, but apparently there’s an app for just about anything in this world.
To find an application that relates to your personal needs, you can browse the categories on the left, or consult the New & Popular Apps Recommended. This is an app goldmine indeed!
Cool Material – This is NOT just another men’s gear blog. We’ve already seen plenty of those, and as interesting and entertaining as they may be, more often than not they all seem to lack that special something. Cool Material seems to carry that Je ne sais quoi quality. Focusing on watches, accessories and gadgets, Cool Material caters to the more upscale men out there, offering tasteful suggestions in other topics as well. These include fashion, music, design and many others. The posts offer high quality in terms of both content and subject, which makes Cool Material a grade A blog in my book. Click on the photos below to get to a couple of posts I found interesting.
Jim’s Pancakes – This most inspiring and fun blog will get you hooked on pancakes (and on this blog of course) in no time. Jim makes pancakes for his daughter in the shapes and colors of pretty much any possible thing you can imagine. Combining ingenuity with superb cooking skills, Jim just keeps on surprising with each post, showing one amazing pancake creation after another.
Similarly to Broken Secrets, Jim’s Pancakes was also a Weekly Blog last week and it tied with the former in terms of popularity. Therefore it made it to this week’s Weekly Faves. Click on the images below to see the amazing edible creations of Jim.
Days with My Father – Phillip Toledano is a professional photographer whose talent, as I think you will agree, is obvious. When Phillip’s mother passed away, it was just him and his father left, seen as he is an only child. With his father’s physical and mental state slowly deteriorating as a result of old age, Philip turned to the one thing he knew best in order to cope with his harsh reality: photography. The result is a mesmerizing photographic diary of Phillip and his interactions with and anecdotes of his father. This sad story is beautifully told, both visually and textually. I can only hope that when I reach my old age I will have family members that will take care of me and love me as Phillip did his father.
Fake Science – This Tumblr blog is 100% fun and entertainment. Take all the ‘facts’ here with a grain (or rather a fist full) of salt. This reminds me of those wacky newspapers you’d find at the Kmart cashier, telling stories of aliens impregnating farm families and what not…Fake Science is a terrific coffee break or past time place to visit. Click on the photos below to see some interesting (but totally fake) posts.
Verbatim Championship – Create your very own media monster on this futuristic, whimsical interface, and fight your way to the Championship. Each fight you win in will earn you points that will make you stronger. You will also have cool replay scenes of your past fights available, so you could brag about your monster in your blog or site. The Verbatim Championship is all about creativity and fun, in the most upscale kind of way possible. My monster, BOB, lost in the 1st fight, and you can get a glimpse of it below. This was a lot of fun! Can you do better?
Youda Safari – Manage your very own safari park and make as much money as possible. How? Make sure each visitor gets to see the animal he or she came for, and that they manage to take a photo of them. Pretty quickly more and more visitors will show up and you will have to keep up with the load. Collect coins and let the animals say ‘cheese’ to the guests!
