Qwiki – What’s your usual research method online when you want to learn more about something or someone? Google? Wikipedia? These two and other Web search tools will most definitely direct you to relevant resources, but I would like to suggest an innovative website that goes about information consumption with an entirely different approach: Qwiki.
Typing a search word or phrase in Qwiki’s search box prompts a wonderland of visually presented information including photos, maps and data that are accompanied by both vocal narration and text. The end result is an engaging presentation on whatever you’d like to learn more about, be it historical figures, events, monuments, animals, even locations and businesses. Start by searching for your hometown on Qwiki and see what I mean. Another example is the one below of the famous philosopher Aristotle. Click the image below to see it.
Sensr – Public webcams broadcasting what goes on in different locations around the world could hardly be considered a new technological development. Another familiar use of webcams is for monitoring what goes on at home while we’re away. Relying on the same basic surveillance concept, Sensr.net offers a different implementation of the webcam that is both exciting and practical. Sensr.net invites you to pick a webcam, whether yours or one of those placed in public locations worldwide (with free access), so you could aim it at something and whenever there’s movement action, Sensr alerts you immediately.
Using basic motion detection, Sensr.net is able to identify the action you can’t see for yourself while at work or anywhere else. This is also a great service to track meaningful moments worldwide. By the way, for additional and creative uses of your computer webcam, see our previous post on the subject, Top 15 Websites that Kick Webcam Butt.
NFL Super Bowl XLV – Many of us have been waiting all year for this event, and on Feb 6 it will become an adrenalin-fused reality; Pittsburgh Steelers will go against the Green Bay Packers at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX . Whatever team you are pitching for, the Super Bowl is all about great entertainment, lots of nachos and salsa (that’s how I roll), and of course, the best TV commercials of the year.
While the Green Bay Packers have three Super Bowl wins under their belt, the Steelers have six. However, the super game on Sunday can turn out either way. May the best team win!
I have only two questions on my mind though: Will President Obama attend the Super Bowl this year? And which TV commercial will top the charts? According to Chiff.com, Fox will continue the record-breaking trend of charging Super Bowl spots for $3 million per 30-second commercial.
Here’s one of Doritos’ Super Bowl 2011 Finalists:
Street Peeper – A winning Weekly Blog, Street Peeper is a fine Sartorialist counterpart, offering high definition photos of well-dressed men and and women (young and beautiful of course) in various global cities.
To explore the cool looks on StreetPeeper, simply click an image on the homepage – these are recent entries. Another option is viewing lookbooks by cities, or by typing a label name or style (i.e. Marc Jacobs) in StreetPeeper’s search box. Another option for checking out street fashion is through the news section. The person behind StreetPeeper and the camera is Phil, a style-savvy guy who started this project following what he calls a “variety of odd-jobs.” Here are a couple of looks I loved.
Philanthroper – The concept of Philanthroper resembles the one of Groupon, only in the non-profit arena. In the FAQ section Philanthroper explains: “You know those daily deal sites? We’re another one of those. But instead of selling something, we’re sharing the story of a new 501(c)3 nonprofit every day. And if you’d like, you can give them $1. We’re trying to make doing good a habit.”
Philanthroper.com is beautifully designed and uses large high resolution photos to make an impact, and rightly so. Some of the ‘recent deals’ include Reef Check and The People’s Music School, although last Sunday’s deal for Canine Assistants touched me the most – see the image below. Users taking part in Philanthroper’s deals make only $1 donations so the commitment is minimal, but the help is immense. Great website.
Artist A Day – Although the Web makes us feel as though virtually anything can be found there, that’s not the case for many artists. Artist a Day brings “attention to artists that otherwise don’t get the attention they deserve,” by showcasing a couple of works of a new artist we would probably have never heard of if it wasn’t for this website. The idea is to introduce users to the artists, and direct them to the artists’ own website or portfolio online.
Artist a Day has an exquisite design as you would expect from an art website, and it also includes Top 5 and Recent artists lists worth checking out. Feel free to vote for your top art works and learn more about emerging new artists. Here are two images by Erik Johansson that I found here on Artist a Day. Here is Johansson’s website if you are interested.
Jelly Shot Taste Kitchen – What started out as a medium to keep friends and family updated on their new jelly shot endeavors soon became the super cute and tasty blog, Jelly Shot Test Kitchen. The two sisters behind the colorful jelly drinks, Michelle and Amy, work wonders and take jelly to a whole new level, and this blog documenting their creations was picked as one of the Weekly Blog winners.
The photos you will find on Jelly Shot Test Kitchen (plus recipes of course) are so beautiful I feel taking a bite off of these would be a crime, virtually destroying a masterpiece. I will let the photos speak for themselves. Click on the images to go to their respective post and recipe, and you will then understand why this blog was mentioned in gourmet magazines such as Saveur.com.
Santa’s Hat Jelly Shot:
P.S. The Jelly Shot Test Kitchen recipe book will be released by Running Press in May 2011.
Nimmo Bay Interactive 360 Video – What a better way to advertise a helicopter resort in British Columbia than to shoot a 360 angle video from a helicopter? Hit play and click & drag your mouse on the video to look anywhere, regardless of the helicopter’s flight direction or angle! The scenery is amazing, but the comprehensive view ability is even better. Here’s the video below. Enjoy.
Sinuous – This game looks simple. All you have to do is avoid bumping into the red dots. Easy, right? Wrong. Meander your way between the dots, collect the colored number circles and move up to the next level. It gets really complicated as you go along. This cool game uses HTML5, the most advanced development standard for structuring and presenting content on the Web. Sinuous was created by Hakim El Hattab; Sound design by Plan8.
