A History of Scientific Underwater Exploration

Luxury Swiss watch company Blancpain has launched Ocean Commitment, an initiative dedicated to safeguarding the world’s oceans and seas. Blancpain’s site also has a stunning collection of underwater photographs. The site’s homepage displays a digital animation of a rotating earth, with pinpoints in various oceans and seas that can be explored further. Each point corresponds to a particular scientific expedition, offering a history of Blancpain’s involvement in underwater exploration. The company initially designed its Fifty Fathoms watch in 1953, which had the ability to sustain underwater pressure up to 91.44 meters (or, as you probably already guessed or knew, 50 fathoms). The site was also built as a way to market Blancpain’s collection of books, the Fifty Fathoms series.
