Gowalla – Location-Based App to Challenge Foursquare

gowalla Gowalla – Location-based phone apps are, some say, the next direction of social networks. Foursquare, one of the big fish in the position-based social networks pond, already scored the Weekly Fave spot on All My Faves back in October. What many people don’t know is that at the same time Foursquare was launched, so was a serious counterpart, Gowalla. The reason the former got all the media attention is that Gowalla initially had more bugs and its development team had some fine tuning to do before the app could stand as a worthy ‘innovative location service’ player.

Today Gowalla is virtually bug-free, looks amazing and is an absolute must mobile app you should tap into. Compatible with the iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Palm and other devices, this location-based application is a fine piece of social network heaven on earth. Although the basic concept and service of Gowalla and Foursquare are the same, Gowalla is available anywhere, has a sexier (much sexier) interface, and its badges (or ‘pins’) look much better than Foursquare’s. Perhaps the looks of an app isn’t as important as its functionality, but in the case of Gowalla, they aced these two parameters like a true pro.

The only downside to this app is that contrary to Foursquare, Gowalla produces exact GPS location of its users, while its nemesis offers a location ‘fuzzing’ feature for those who do not wish to disclose of their exact location to the rest of the community. For more on the Foursquare-Gowalla face-off, read this. See the screen shots below to get a feel of Gowalla’s magic.

Dailymile – Exercise Logs Run into the Micro-Blogosphere

dailymile Dailymile – Keeping track of your exercise, daily meals and other fitness & health related sites are all over the place, and we’ve already featured a great site under this category, RunThere. It’s amazing to see how entire user communities with the same interest contribute to the growth and complexity of exercise log sites. Dailymile is yet another excellent resource worth your investigation if you’re into adding the social aspect to your daily fitness routine.

Guided by the underlining concept of sharing your training, the Dailymile is a comprehensive one-stop place for all things fitness, twitter style. The constantly fed site (as in news feeds) caters not only to joggers (both amateur and pro), but also to swimmers, cyclists, weight lifters and what have you. Beautifully designed, Dailymile is heavily armed with cool features such as user-contributed routes (using Google Maps), important information on sports events, challenges, forums and groups. Log in with Facebook Connect and simply choose your US location. All you have left to do now is to explore the almost infinite training possibilities available, nicely and digitally presented.

Some of my favorite entries on Dailymile include the Manhattan Bridge ride in NY, Run to the Sea in Boston, MA and this important tip on handling dog encounters. Submit your favorite jogging track or cycling route here.

Flixtime – Create a Unique Video

flixtime Flixtime – Flixtime claims that it “turns your photos and videos into stunning and unique videos in just minutes!” So I decided to take them for a test drive, see just how good this service is. Since I use my cellular quite often to take pics and videos, I have chosen some of the pics on my mobile I found interesting. In addition, I added a music remix created by DJ and Producer Micha Moor of the 1988 hit by Bros, When will I be Famous. The result is below. I had a great time creating it and was super happy with the result. To conclude, I think this is a great service and I am sure I will use it again in the future. I only wish they had offered a way of uploading pics directly from Picasa, and music directly from YouTube.

Dcyder – Helping You Decide

dcyder Dcyder – You’re faced with a dilemma. What would you do? I guess you would solve it by talking to yourself or consulting friends and family, thereby reaching a conclusion. But that way of solving problems is so traditional and passé ; now you can use the web community to sort out any old catch 22. Dcyder is a “service for when you’re stuck and not sure what to do. You simply add your dilemma to Dcyder and the web community votes and adds comments to help you decide.” Start by helping someone else, like this woman who needs to decide which wedding dress she should wear, and then add your own dilemma.

TubeDisco – Mixing YouTube Videos

tubedisco TubeDisco – I usually listen to streamed music through Blip.fm (click here to listen to my station), but often I simply enjoy browsing YouTube and finding something to listen to from the video site’s results. The only problem is that I can’t search for the next song while listening to the one being played, which is why I used to have two YouTube tabs open in my browser – that’s not fun. TubeDisco has identified this problem and created a solution; a YouTube video DJ Mixer. The mixer is very simple and you don’t have to be a professional DJ to mix the songs (try it yourself). In terms of how it works, you can either keep on feeding it with music you searched for or, you can simply start with a favorite track and TubeDisco will feed in similar songs, even mix them for you.

If you like this service, I recommend joining their facebook fanpage. The site is still relatively new and they need your support. I enjoyed it so much I decided to join. What about you?

Paris 26 Gigapixels – Getting High on the City of Lights

paris26 Paris 26 Gigapixels – Paris is romantic and majestic, no doubt about it. Its architectural monuments are so well-known, I often see them as living logos of one of the world’s most famous capitals. But even if you’ve been to Paris, checked all the must-see boxes of the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, l’Arc De Triomphe and Champs-Élysées Boulevard, there’s a new cool way to explore Paris. This amazing site, Paris 26 Gigapixels, offers a 360-degree bird’s eye view of Paris from above, while incorporating many information and reference points for you to discover as you cruise along the city’s skyline.

Accompanied by the so French and so inviting accordion music from the adorable movie Amelie, Paris 26 Gigapixels brings the magic back to online city views, and makes Paris all the more seductive and enchanting. I wish we’d see more major cities implement the same philosophy and method. Tourism in such locations would no doubt increase significantly that way. See if you can locate in this interactive map the Théâtre de l’Odéon or the Basilique du Sacré-Cœur…

Young Me Now Me – Same Pose, Different Decade

youngmenowme Young Me Now Me – I’m sure most of you have pictures taken when you were kids. Do you ever have the urge to pose the same as you did in that old picture, only as a grownup?  I don’t, but apparently there are many other people who do, and they even share it. If you don’t believe me, start with the pictures below.

TutorArt – Cut to the Chase Web Design and Inspiration

tutorart TutorArt – This terrific web design website keeps it short and sweet. It’s a straightforward site “dedicated to all kinds of artists, graphic designers, photographers and 3D motion designers. Our aim is to provide you with inspirations for your own work, letting you develop your own style or get inspired by other great artists’ work.” And TutorArt does just that with simplicity, sophisticated design (hey, that’s their specialty) and a lot of love for this creative field. They offer relevant articles, artist showcases, and even offer cool freebies such as tutorials, wallpapers and icons. Click on the photos below to see some of my personal favorite posts.

How It Should Have Ended – Great Finales, 100% of the Time

howitshould How It Should Have Ended – The title of this site says it all. It was founded by two friends who came back from the cinema and started coming up with various alternative endings to the movie they saw. They decided then and there to create a website for “short, parody animations of new endings to some of our favorite movies.” Think the Avatar ending was too tacky? So did I. See the video below to see how it should have ended… Explore the vast collection of movie parodies listed on the site, including classics such as Matrix, StarTrek and Wlily Wonka.

Bloons Super Monkey – More Bloons, Please!

bloonssupermonkey Bloons Super Monkey – I consider More Bloons to be the Pac-Man of the 21st century. The difference is that in the 80s, we were loyal to the original version of Pac-Man and no Ms. Pac Man could have made us sway away from the original master. More Bloons is still the best, but we (the Bloons lovers) are welcoming the different variations of the Bloons game. So if you are like me, and enjoy the sound of the popping balloons, then there is a big chance you will like the new Bloons Super Monkey.

In this game you must take control over Super Monkey as he embarks on a Bloon popping frenzy through 5 stages and 15 waves. Collect and use Power Blops to upgrade Super Monkey in three different skill paths. Watch out for super powerups and make sure you score the Bronze – in each wave to advance to the next. Good luck!

Penguin Dinner 2 – Serve your Penguin Guests

penguindiner2 Penguin Dinner 2 – If you have been following us for a while, there is a chance you already played the original version of Penguin Dinner. It is one of the more popular games on All My Faves. I can’t understand, let alone explain why people (me included) love this game so much, but we simply do. When Penguin Dinner 2 was released we (the AMF Games team) knew it will be a big hit, and it indeed became a huge success. I visit this game every day to serve some more lemonade, coke, coffee, ice cream and cake. I truly don’t know why this is such a source of enjoyment, but the truth of the matter is I’m addicted…
