Motherboard.tv – Tech’s Cultural Anthropology

Motherboard.tv –  Keeping track of technological advances is rather easy; quick headline-skimming on TechCrunch, Wired or any major newspaper these days will do that. But one aspect of technology that is often difficult to track and explore is tech’s cultural dimension. Dell’s Motherboard offers just that, in the most professional, engaging and alluring way possible.

According to their About page, Motherboard is “an online video network and community focused on the exploration of the nature and culture of technology, as viewed through the lenses of curated editorial content, community, and dialogue.” Tap into original content videos covering a plethora of topics including film + video, music, art + design, gaming, environment + the body, and ‘wonderful.’

Among seemingly infinite informative delights, you will find all the hottest topics buzzing around the Web right now, such as the Gap logo conundrum, or check this video showing the solution to the mysterious bee shortage in the US. Each video is accompanied by superb textual content, which makes any session on Motherboard a most enjoyable didactic experience.

YouTube Instant – When Stanford Com. Sci. Students Have a Bet

YouTube Instant – If you like losing control every now and then, or if you like to let someone else take the Wheel for you, YouTube Instant is for you. As you may know, Google  recently came out with the instant search feature. This sparked computer science student Feross Aboukhadijeh from Stanford University, CA to create a YouTube-based site built on the ‘instant’ concept of Google’s.

Finding videos on YouTube Instant is easy. Simply type in the name of the artist, song or any other key word, and the site will automatically start playing the first (and probably the highest rated/most viewed related) video. I feel this instant project is a bit too aggressive, as it leaves very little to no control over the selected videos in the hands of the user. To give an example, see what happens when you type in just one letter in the search box (I typed in ‘J’ – see screen shot below). In addition, the number of related videos on the right seems too limited in my opinion.

Although the design aims for a light and informal look and feel, it’s a nice try, nothing more. I’m a bit annoyed by the thought I don’t really have much say over the videos someone else is selecting for me. Since I’d like to remain in control in terms of the content I consume, I’ll continue exploring videos on the good old formal YouTube.com, and on the All My Faves Video page, thank you very much. On the other hand, I realize I am a bit conservative in my views; try YouTube Instant for yourself and see if you enjoy it more than I did.

Dating Fails – Charming, Captivating and Funny. Bad Date!

Dating Fails – Provocative at times, this Cheezburger blog is here to accentuate awkward, dumb and weird moments in the context of dates and relationships.  This blog is quite new, so there aren’t many entries in the blog’s archive as of yet. To get you going, see the short video below of a Break Up Win, rather than fail…

YouTube Play – Bi-Annual Event of Mind-Blowing Video Creativity

YouTube Play – This bi-annual Creative Video event is an amazing project of YouTube in collaboration with the Guggenheim Museum and HP, “to discover and showcase exceptional talent working in the ever-expanding realm of online video.” Users all over were invited to submit their unique creative video, and currently the Guggenheim has narrowed it down to the top 125 videos, displayed on the YouTube Play Channel.

As a means to track the technical and innovative advances of users on the Web, the YouTube Play event happens only once every two years, and this makes it all the more special and exciting. Out of the current 125 finalists, up to 20 will be chosen by a jury of art, design, film and video experts. These winners will be displayed at the Guggenheim museums (NY, Berlin, Venice and Bilbao, Spain) throughout October 2010.

Want to sample some or all of the 125 videos that made it to the list? Simply visit the YouTube Play Channel, or start with Some of My Dreams by Tadas Vidmantas (categorized as Narrative), below, that I especially adored.

ooVoo – Online Communication Taken to a New Level

ooVoo – Video chat is all but new. Google does it, so does Skype; MSN offers it as part of their Messenger service, and online video conferencing is also provided by Rounds. And this is just a quick list. ooVoo tries to be different, and in fact, based on a recent study commissioned by ooVoo, 8 out of 10 Skype users apparently prefer ooVoo over the former.

Let’s see how it measures up to or, if it really exceeds Skype as ooVoo claims. In terms of features, ooVoo offers video chat, video conferencing, phone calls and desktop sharing (that’s right). Right off the bat, desktop sharing is a crucial business tool I can definitely see coming into high use. Secondly, the ooVoo video chat is possible with friends and colleagues who don’t have ooVoo installed. You simply provide them with a certain link you receive from ooVoo after you sign up, and your friends’ browser will use that link to get in visual touch.

So, final verdict? ooVoo is easy to use, the sound and visual quality is terrific (which reminds me of those countless times when Skype lacked sound and video quality), and the video chat feature is free. I’m going to switch from Skype and give ooVoo a real test drive. Seems worth it!

The complete list of all ooVoo’s features is right there on their homepage. You should also check out their business solutions overview. See the screen shot below of my ooVoo profile, offering the video chat link for friends ooVoo-less. That’s ingenious!

Twitcam – The Happy Marriage of Feeds and Video

Twitcam – Experience a whole new kind of Twitter with Twitcam, the priest who has brought together under God tweets and video. How does it work? Set your webcam and turn it on; sign in with your Twitter account log in info; start Twitcamming.

The Twitcam interface looks great, it’s easy to work with and interaction with other twitter users is a lot of fun. Your Twitcam broadcast is automatically posted to Twitter (video description and link), and your following audience sees it all. Twitcam also makes it easy for you to stay connected with your Twitter friends without the need to switch back and forth between the two sites; it’s all accessible from your broadcast page on Twitcam!

When you’re finished with your video, don’t worry; Twitcam archives it so you’ll have it on your page next time you log in. I wonder when there will be an option to video chat on Twitter. I hope Twitcam will take on the challenge…

Ignite – Ideas on Stage and on Video

Ignite – This great concept reminded me of TED, only that Ignite is more bite-sized, offering five minute videos and talks of inspiring and insightful ideas and theories. Ignite is not so much a website as it is an event and phenomena; Ignite events have already taken place in over 100 cities worldwide, where presenters “share their personal and professional passions, using 20 slides that auto-advance every 15 seconds for a total of just five minutes.”

Ignite events are sponsored by Bing and Facebook, and I strongly encourage you to visit the site if only to explore their video section of past Ignite talks and events. The next couple Ignite events will take place in Portland, Phoenix and Denver (Sep-Oct 2010), so if you’ll be around these locations this and next month, I suggest you stop by. See the video below I enjoyed watching, by Julia Grace on Are You Really as Cool as You Seem on Facebook? Happy discoveries…

Since Wetpaint specializes in online content, I won’t be surprised if this particular entertainment venue will make you wish Wetpaint had covered other interest areas as well. With the intent of offering top and engaging content while inviting users to interact with each other, Wetpaint is exceptional; you’ll understand why the way you consume content on this site is remarkable compared to what’s already out there.

LaughFactory – Described as the No. 1 comedy club in the country by USA Today, LaughFactory will bring you to the brink of asphyxiation in the best meaning possible. I guarantee you are going to laugh so hard, and I’m sure you will become addicted to this site in no time.

Some of the big names include Roseanne Barr, Jim Carrey, Jeff Dunham, Kathy Griffin and many, many others. The site is pouring with supreme comedy videos, and even their New Faces category, which in other comedy club sites is less than mediocre, over exceeded my expectations.

Explore the various content options LaughFactory has to offer, including Comedians, Channels, Magazines, my favorite -Videos, Contests, Joke Bank, and of course, Tickets. If you’re at work when browsing this site, be careful; you could easily find yourself still roaming around when the day is over… Enjoy the short video below of Laugh Factory’s ‘new face’ Mathew Taylor, talking about the perks of having a GPS. Exercise TV – Result-Driven Fitness Resource

Exercise TV – Searching for fitness and exercise guides on the Web is easy -there are thousands of sources out there. But Exercise TV truly is a hardcore, no nonsense fitness resource you’d better tune into, because if you’re serious, really serious about losing weight and keeping it off, Exercise TV is your godsend helper.

I’ve never really given kick boxing a chance, and I think it’s time to move on to something that’s high-paced and challenging. See the video that inspired me, below. Be sure to consult your physician before your workout using Exercise TV.
