Pixlr – For those of you working in the graphic design and photography fields, Pixlr is a bliss. The company calls itself “an online cloud-based image tools and utilities” provider serving “both non-professionals and professional users with editing needs…”
Pixlr offers a wide collection of services, all centered around photo editing including the classic photo editor, and the Pixlr-O-Matic Facebook app that turns your Facebook photos into retro snaps. These are but two features Pixlr offers. Finally there’s a free alternative to the costly Photoshop software (although limited in features compared to the latter).
Decide – Don’t you just hate it when you buy say, a digital camera you have been craving for a while, and a week later you find out the price dropped by $50? Decide.com is here to help you make smarter purchases of electronics by letting you know if now’s a good time to buy that laptop, camera, game console or any other gadget you’re after.
Decide.com uses sophisticated prediction algorithms that make rational forecasts of price drops and new model releases to help you make smarter purchases that actually save you money. Decide.com also comes in a mobile version (not an app per se) so you can make better choices while in the electronics store. Here’s a glimpse of what Decide.com looks like when searching for a Samsung digital camera (which I’ve been dying to get):
I’d better check out the new model first before making the purchase. How else would have I known about this? Thanks, Decide!
EcoGeek – The Weekly Blog winner of last week, this geeky yet awesome blog is devoted to “exploring the symbiosis between nature and technology.” EcoGeek is far from offering superficial, well-intentioned posts about making the planet a cleaner and better place. Far from it. The blog offers well-researched and well-written articles on pressing issues concerning the American nation and the world.
Here are a couple of examples of the posts you will find on EcoGeek. The first made me all warm and fuzzy inside since I’m an avid cyclist: Us Moving Forward on Bicycle Interstate Highway System. The second is a post announcing the terrific news concerning electronics waste:
EcoGeek is an environmental godsend, and I’d like to share with you the site’s call to action: “We’ve got to keep 6 billion people happy without destroying our planet. It’s the biggest challenge we’ve ever faced….but we’re taking it on. Are you with us?” Well, are you?
TuneIn – Everybody has a favorite radio station. Some of us like to listen to it while driving to or from work, others enjoy tuning in while at the office. Regardless of your favorite radio station, TuneIn offers better station finding and listening, whether online or on the go.
Aside from finding you the local radio stations by your physical location (via computer IP address), TuneIn introduces you to over 50,000 stations from all over the world, based on your chosen genre and favorite artists. I’m a huge blues and Muddy Waters fan, and here’s what TuneIn found me based on my music preferences:
The sound quality TuneIn offers is superb compared to the average radio station online, and the discovery aspect of this cool site is priceless. The TuneIn mobile app is a must-have if you like listening to radio, and you can use it while you’re driving, as long as you keep your two hands on the wheel -simply set your radio station’s play when you get into your car and you’re all set for the entire drive.
The TuneIn mobile app also invites you to follow favorite DJs and find new music based on favorite songs and artists. The best part about the app however, is the cross-device station preset option which means guaranteed good listening. The app is available for the iPhone, Android, Palm, Blackberry, Samsung Bada, Windows Phone, and for these home devices: Google TV, Yahoo TV, Roku and WDTV.
MyPublisher – Who hasn’t come across those dreadful, totally over the top photo albums grandmas almost drool over at every large family gathering? Forget about those. Now there’s MyPublisher, a stylish website that helps you create affordable, high-quality custom-made books that offer “personal, creative outlets that let people truly express themselves.”
Take your pick between photo albums, photo calendars, scrapbook pages and even premium photo cards. I recommend checking out the site’s Just Published pages to see what other people have created, and to learn more about all the cool features MyPublisher offers. Here’s one of my personal favorites, Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong. Isn’t it adorable?
Evian’s Let’s Baby Dance – If you haven’t seen it yet, the French mineral water company Evian has been leading a huge global campaign these past couple of years with babies as the brand’s leading stars (remember the roller-skating babies video that instantly went viral?). These past few weeks billboards and roadside posters in major cities worldwide have been decorated with images of pretty people wearing a T-shirt with a baby’s body so it looks like the model has a baby figure from the neck down . To make this campaign a true cross-platform project, the “Baby Inside” advertising concept has become viral online as well with Evian’s Let’s Baby Dance website.
Evian’s interactive and totally fun Let’s Baby Dance site invites you to take part in the global movement of working it baby style by using your computer camera. Before you begin, hit play on the homepage to see what previous users have done, and then click the “Take Part” button under the main image. You will be asked to pick your baby of choice and turn on your webcam. The ad’s signature track, a cool new version of Tom Tom Club’s Wordy Rappinghood by Uffie (remixed by DJ Mehdi), can be downloaded via iTunes Store.
DocsTeach – The National Archives are reaching out to teachers and educators across the country, offering an amazing collection of primary resources of historical documents and information. Moreover, DocsTeach invites teachers to browse and create classroom activities built around primary sources. DocsTeach is the perfect example of how drastically education has changed since the old blackboard school days. It is the perfect aid for the didactic confluence of fascinating history with engaging teaching methods.
Here’s an activity example I found on DocsTeach, The Settlement of the American West. Click the image below to get to the full activity.
Porsche Everyday – When a powerful brand wants to increase exposure even more online, in a way that’s part seductive, part informative, what does it do? It creates a sexy website that doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. That is exactly what Porsche Everyday is about: an interactive, media-rich website offering close encounters with the luxurious sports car.
Explore videos and stories of proud Porsche owners, see the various models and even build your own. Although this website’s main purpose is advertisement, Porsche did a great job at maintaining the famous car’s prestigious reputation.

It’s a “web-based service that allows users to hold text, voice, and video chats on multiple instant messaging protocols.” That means you can log into all your chat and messaging accounts in one place, and no imo registration or signup is required. It also means your friends needn’t be on imo -they can simply use whatever chat service they’re registered to and interact with you while you’re on imo.

Scobleizer is the creation of Robert Scoble, a former ‘technology evangelist’ at Microsoft and an avid tech blogger keen on writing about and sharing stories concerning today’s technology movers and shakers. Even if you’re not an engineer or tech professional, Scobleizer can be an eye opener in terms of its content and perspective.

xoJane – It’s always refreshing to find a genuinely great online source for women that’s well above the Glamour-Cosmopolitan standard. xoJane is a sophisticated, witty and downright helpful resource for women seeking a regular place to visit for bona fide tips on fashion & beauty, tech, relationships and other topics.

Here’s a post I found totally right on: Riding in Cars with Insanely Windy Hair: Two Creative Solutions by Anya.
Getaround – This innovative startup is the 2011 TechCrunch Disrupt winner. What makes it so special? Getaround has taken an existing concept -car rental- and made it better, more affordable and more accessible. The idea is simple.
