HardlyWork – The name couldn’t have been a more appropriate choice of words. HardlyWork offers all the perks of checking in on your Facebook friends -on Facebook- but with the false appearance of a 100% work oriented spreadsheet. Simply sign in via Facebook log in button and see the magic happen before your eyes – away from your bosses’. Here’s what the Facebook spreadsheet looks like:
As you can see, the Excel formula bar is actually where you search for friends names. Hovering your mouse above likes and comments shows you their content and the person who made them and, if you need to log out, simply hit the X sign you usually click to close windows. It’s so simple and cunning we should expect an overwhelming expansion of hard working spreadsheet employees all over the country in no time…
Picplum – Earlier this month I wrote about Snail Mail My Email, a community art project that turned email messages into handwritten letters and sent them to people’s physical post boxes. Well, this Weekly Fave is based on a similar concept, but instead of handwritten letters, Picplum dives into the retro experience of sending photo prints (yes, actual photos you can hold in your hand).
How does Picplum work? Either upload or email the pictures you want to be sent as prints, and provide a recipient’s address. Picplum prints these on paper and sends them to your family, friends or whatever recipient you requested. Send the first batch of printed photos for free, and if you want automatic printing, plans start at $7/month.
Codeacademy – HTML, CSS anyone? The bewildering world of programming seems so far fetched to most non-engineers, including myself. But I do know programming brings magic in terms of website appearance and infrastructure. Codeacademy is here to make the frightening and peculiar world of coding a simpler topic to learn. It offers “a better, more interactive way to learn how to program.” Thanks to Codeacademy creators Ryan Bubinski and Zach Sims, learning to code is now more accessible -and fun- than ever.
The lesson framework in Codeacademy is a step by step process that ensures high retention rates and increases your chances of learning while having fun! Although these lessons are quite basic they meant the world to me, a common Java illiterate! And look, I managed to code an alert message as you can see below.
Start with Codecademy’s eight lesson plan, and then sign up to online courses to maintain and perfect your training. You know, I never thought I’d ever say this but programming is fun!
Healthline Body Maps – There’s no way around it. When you see something with your own two eyes, you understand it better than by just reading about it. Healthline, the medical information provider, has partnered with GE Healthymagination to create a software of 3D anatomy maps of the human body so laypersons like you and me could better understand health by literally looking into ourselves.
When exploring a certain part or system of the human body, Healthline will offer interesting articles and tips relevant to that part of the body. So if, for example, I’m exploring the anatomy of women’s abdomen, Healthline recommends reads on digestive health, among other articles.
The 3D Body Maps constitute an appreciated added value to Healthline’s medical info center. Besides, I’ve always found the human body a most extraordinary machine. Healthline’s Body Maps adds a visual navigation tool to further enhance the human anatomy experience. Thanks, Healthline!
Nexus Contraptions – Instead of going for the conventional advertising campaign to market its Nexus S phone, Google has come up with an engaging way to get your attention. Using its video hosting and sharing platform YouTube, Google’s Nexus Contraptions invites you to play the logic game where you need to get the G ball into the red basket in each level. This emulates building your own Nexus S phone by “bouncing, bubbling, and blasting Google apps into the phone.”
To learn more about Google’s Nexus S phone, start with this fun game, and then explore the device itself.
Memrise – This vocabulary builder is unlike anything I’ve seen online thus far. I visited Memrise thinking I will use it to freshen up the advanced French vocabulary I learned back in college, but I soon found myself learning Mandarin. Memrise is a fast, easy and above all, enjoyable way to learn a new language and to enhance the ones you already speak.
What’s so special about Memrise? The team behind this innovative tool has mastered the science of new knowledge acquisition (especially the kind that’s involved in learning new words) to ensure long-term retention stays above 90%. How? Contributing users fluent enough in a given language give word association tips, and share their way of remembering what words mean. Association, according to science, is the best knowledge and memory retention method. Here’s a solid example of Memrise’s magic, showing how to remember the Mandarin word for Man.
The Memrise magic doesn’t stop there. By using a Farmville-like seed planting and greenhouse growing bait, the system gives you incentives to come back later and practice what you’ve learned. Even the quiz questions are built in a way that helps you remember the new vocab words better. I seriously believe Memrise is a must in every classroom across the country. Well done, Memrise team!
Doggelganger – The Pedigree Adoption Drive in New Zealand came up with a genius project to encourage and increase dog adoptions in the Kiwi country. Together with NEC Technology, Pedigree’s Doggelganger offers a “human to canine pairing software.” What does that mean, exactly? It’s quite simple, really. All you have to do is upload a clear photo of your face (you can also take one with your webcam), make sure the Doggelganger’s face model matches your facial features and hit Begin.
Now the fun begins. The software will match your facial features with those of dogs available for adoption in New Zealand’s SPCA centers. Once a match is found, you’ll see the adorable dog’s face right next to yours. When you think about it, this creates an immediate emotional bond and an instant increase of both the dog’s exposure and the likelihood of finding these dogs a home. Pedigree should do this for the US crowd as well. Most definitely!
What do you think? They really do resemble one another, don’t they?
Dragon Dictation – This iPhone app by Nuance Communications is a dream come true to many busy professionals, and there’s no wonder why it’s currently one of the most recommended (and free) apps by major tech blogs and news sites. With Dragon Dictation you simply say whatever you need done, whether it’s an email, a Facebook status update, text message, a to-do task or a call to someone. The app will do it for you, fast. This app was created by a “voice recognition application powered by Dragon NaturallySpeaking that allows you to easily speak and instantly see your text content.”
Dragon Dictation is revolutionary in its field, and it offers an easy solution to busy businessmen and women on the go, with the added hands-free bonus. Currently free for Apple mobile products, available at the App Store. This is amazing stuff!
