Info Mesh is like a virtual museum for the World Wide Web.
In Tim Berners Lee’s 1989 proposal, “Information Mesh” was a proposed title for what eventually became known as the World Wide Web. In honor of the past 30 years, Info Mesh is displaying facts and images from various decades of the web’s always-evolving existence. Keeping in line with the site’s theme, Info Mesh is both extremely simple and designed with a modern look. There are multiple timelines to explore on the site, such as the evolution of the scroll bar, or an evolution of web vocabulary, or the evolution of logos of top tech companies. There’s much more to explore, as well.
Information Mesh was built by “Media & Interaction Design students at ECAL/University of Art and Design, Lausanne.” It originated at a one-week workshop in San Francisco. Even though it’s a school project, Info Mesh is also a love-letter to the internet, and anyone who’s spent time on the World Wide Web in the past 30 years will find something to enjoy on the site. It’s nostalgic, historical, and downright interesting. It’s often too easy to take for granted the current state of the web and web design. By revisiting the past, we can better understand the present. We can also better plan for the future.
