LeanIn.Org is the nonprofit organization founded by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg to empower all women to achieve their ambitions.
Lean In is the online component of Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg’s women-empowering non-profit organization. The site is also based on Sandberg’s book, entitled Lean In. Both the book and the Lean In website offer encouragement for women to be ambitious and achieve their goals to obtain success similar to that of the author. The website offers several articles, discussions and conversation-starting stories written primarily by women, for women. There are articles written by U.S. Foreign Service officers as well as by celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon. The voices speaking on Lean In come from a wealth of different backgrounds and skill sets, but all of them contribute to the important discussion of what it means to be a woman in 21st century society.
LeanIn.org also offers several free online courses designed specifically for women seeking to learn practical leadership and communication skills to apply in their daily lives. The courses were created in-part by the Clayman Institute for Gender Studies at Stanford University, so their quality and academic rigor are on-par with the prestigious university (the major difference, of course, being that these courses are free and can be done at your leisure from home!). Lean In also connects its community members through “circles,” or monthly online meet up groups for women to discuss difficult topics and support each other in their various endeavors while ensuring that their information and personal details remain confidential. Any one can start a circle and connect with their friends or other users. It’s also easy to find a circle and connect with another group of individuals. These circles are primarily self-run, although Lean In offers support, materials and guidance along the way. The service is offered through the social networking platform Mightybell.
