Your Voice is a nonprofit organization and digital platform created by Whisper dedicated to raising mental health awareness for young adults.
Your Voice was designed so that any individual could share his or her story about dealing with and overcoming mental health issues. The idea is to raise awareness about mental health by, as the site claims, “showing how many of us struggle and ultimately prevail over the same issues.” The site is powered by Whisper, and the nonprofit was created after founders Brad Brooks and Michael Heywerd noticed the large amount of Whisper users anonymously revealing experiences and struggles with emotional pain. Your Voice offers a platform dedicated to the discussion of this topic, an important step towards erasing the stigma of mental health issues in modern society.
Although Whisper is anonymous, Your Voice gives a face to each personal story with mental illness. The site also places an emphasis on video rather than text and images. Users upload short videos via webcam, speaking directly to the camera about any mental health issues they’ve experienced in the past or are experiencing in the present. There are honest, emotional stories about dealing with depression, anxiety and stress, and everyone who’s posted on Your Voice is brave for making a contribution. The site is designed so that visitors can scroll through a lengthy list of videos uploaded by different individuals, each with a unique story and perspective. It’s also easy to upload and share your own story about anything on Your Voice. The site asks that videos fall somewhere in the 40 second to 5 minute range, but aside from that the platform is fairly open-ended. Your Voice is an important organization, and the platform it has created with Whisper is a useful for tool for anyone and everyone dealing with mental health issues to realize that they are not alone.
