3D City: A Free City-Creation Game

3D City is a game that lets you create your own 3D city in your browser.

Build Your Own City in Your Browser

3D City is a 3D city builder and simulation that has been hosted on GitHub. The game is like a scaled-down version of Sim City, in that it allows users to design their own communities and maintain them according to various needs as time goes on. The maps and tools available on 3D City are not as robust as Sim City or comparable games, but the developers have still managed to create a well-designed world with some fun, intuitive gameplay. Before starting a game, there’s also the option to generate new maps in order to refresh where the water and trees are located, and to change the game’s level of difficulty. You can also play using the “height map,” which takes elevation into consideration.

Replay the Game with New Maps and Resources

3D City begins in the year 1901, on an empty map with a certain amount of money allocated to purchase various buildings and resources. You can build commercial properties, residential houses, industrial zones, coal plants, water ports, police and fire stations, parks, roads and many more components that lead to a fully-functioning city. As time progresses, the game alerts you as to what your city is lacking and how it can be improved. There’s also an “Eval” button that describes how you’re doing as mayor of the fictional city, with suggestions as to what you could do to improve. Although the gameplay is not complex enough to account for populations that supposedly would be living in the map, it is definitely fun to design new cities and work through many of the problems and issues of city creation. It’s great to have a free alternative to a game like Sim City that still manages to be as enjoyable and intellectually stimulating. As more developers continue to the project, it can only grow stronger.
