InTheMo – Video-Based Recommendations for Your City’s Cool Spots

InTheMo – This smart video-based recommendation guide claims to be “the first worldwide city guide that learns what you like.” Basically the InTheMo system ‘learns’ what you’re into by keeping track of your clicks in the site, and suggesting city spots that suit your taste and preferences.

The concept behind InTheMo is creating a community of ‘local experts’ who define and share the location of cool spots worldwide (covering 576 cities in 16 different countries). How do videos fit in exactly? Well, according to InTheMo’s press release from Nov 22, 2010, “the site uses documentary style video to share the stories and personalities behind these businesses” (PR Newswire). To start exploring the video recommendations at InTheMo, I suggest diving into the Best Of Lists -most recommended spots- and be sure to pick your city (right under the InTheMo logo on the top left). Now let the video fun begin; click Videos and see InTheMo’s visual guide in action.

In order for the InTheMo system to learn more about the activities and attractions you are likely to love, sign in (I used my Facebook account for that), pick your city and start ‘Recing’ your favorite city spots (as in Rec for recommendation), while specifying the degree of interest in percentages, from 50% to 100%. Picking 15 Recs is a good starting point for InTheMo’s system to know what other spots it can recommend you. InTheMo is a fun and interesting service worth checking out. Here’s a screen shot of the Rec It options I chose from.

OhLife – Daily Diary via Email

OhLife – This site has such a unique concept I was anxious to try it out. The basic idea of OhLife is to keep a daily diary -totally private of course- that shows you how you’ve changed through time, and what events and feelings affected you the most. And all this happens using a tool you use on a daily basis anyway – your email.

Once you’ve signed up OhLife sends this question to your email: “How did your day go?” Simply answer it and hit Reply. Over the course of the following days this will go on and over time you will see the changes you went through in terms of events, relationships and feelings – essentially life in a nut shell, only it’s the most interesting one since it’s yours! Set up the time you wish OhLife to send you the question email, even add pics. It’s the ideal modern-day diary for the busy urbanists.

Appreciate It – The Longest Collaborative Thank You Note Ever

Appreciate It – This site is straightforward and heart-warming; each user submits the thing he or she is appreciative of or thankful for, and the accumulated submissions creates a huge cloud of interesting, often bizarre, ‘I appreciate it’ notes. Some of my favorites include “being clean,” “the health of my family, the greatest wealth is health,” and “having a healthy baby at 40.” What were you appreciative for in 2010? Submit it using the form on the bottom of the page.

To give a couple of examples of Prolific Living’s insightful reads, I highly recommend reading these two posts: Self-Reflection: 19 Things I Wish I Knew Earlier in Life and From Fear to Motivation 22 Radical Thoughts. These are but two examples of the immense world of better mind and body tips Farnoosh is offering on Prolific Living. Other topics you will find here include ‘for fun,’ ‘for the body,’ for the heart,’ ‘for the mind,’ ‘for the soul,’ ‘on the road,’ podcasts and videos.  If you’re seeking well-written inspiration to last a lifetime, Prolific Living is it. Here’s an interesting video Farnoosh has published on her blog, titled Yoga Flow Series 1: Welcoming Fall. Yes, she does that, too! Enjoy.

Delish – The Whole World of Delicious Cooking

Delish – One of the most comprehensive cooking & recipe sites I’ve seen in a while, MSN’s Delish is truly a one-stop place for all your cooking, party hosting and food how-to needs.

Delish’s various features are too many to list here, but here are the main things I think you will enjoy exploring: the obvious, recipe collection, broken down to Popular -it’s where I found an amazing list of Under-30-Minutes Recipes– Special Features, and Hints & Help. More interesting sections include Parties & Holidays, Food in the news, and Coupons. Although Delish is an all-you-need resource for cooking, I recommend consulting our Cooking and Recipes pages for complementary websites.

Nuji – Find Cool Items, Tag and Share

Nuji – The idea behind Nuji is simple; “a free service where you can share and discover products you love with like-minded people.” How does it work? Use the Facebook Connect to log in, install the Nuji bookmarklet (a simple drag and drop installation), download the iPhone app if you wish, and start tagging. The Nuji innovation is simple, yet so powerful and useful I fell in love with it at first tag! See the screen shot below of one of my Nuji tags I did over at Urban Outfitters.

Once you’re all set up with the bookmarklet, you simply surf the Web as you would normally do, and when you stumble upon an interesting product of any kind, you click the ‘Tag with Nuji’ toolbar in your browser and select the tag location. After you have made some tags you can then proceed to start following other Nuji users with your line of taste, be it fashion and style, technology or any other field. I had a terrific time using Nuji, and I’ve already found several Nuji users to be inspired by.Here are but a few products I added to my Nuji list.

Stuff No One Told Me – Short, Cute and True

Stuff No One Told Me – A Weekly Blogs king, this witty and fun blog is all about lessons learned, wrapped up with a good laugh. Alex Noriega, the Spanish-born creator, indulges us with a concise statement about life, accompanied by a cute illustration on a monthly basis. Once a month is hardly the update frequency you would expect from a blog, but it’s totally worth it. It’s clever, lovely, and intellectually satisfying. Kudos, Alex! See a couple of posts as decent examples.

Jumo – Literally Following Issues and Causes You Care About

Jumo – This website is simply amazing. It has cleverly combined the world of NGO/NPOs with the social network sphere, making it the best ‘follow your cause’ venue currently on the Web. In simpler terms, Jumo “makes it easy for you to find, follow, and support the issues and organizations that are important to you.”

Once you’ve signed up via Facebook, the Jumo platform asks you to select your areas of interest (such as human rights, environment and animals, poverty, art & culture, etc.). Next, based on your location, the Jumo system showcases nine different organizations and causes for you to follow in each of your chosen fields. See it here:

When you’re done, you’re taken to Jumo’s silverlining page: a Facbook profile-like page, customized according to your preferences, displaying important news and updates -feeds, really- relevant to your profile, plus suggested causes and organizations to follow. It looks amazing, includes content I’d actually like to read and it’s all for a good purpose. Hooray Jumo!

Little People – Street Art that Speaks Volumes

Little People – Here’s a super cute blog, a Weekly Blog winner from earlier this month. As opposed to many of the art blogs out there -however beautiful and inspiring they may be- this particular one is entirely different. The art itself (and the artist behind it) is guided by a simple yet revolutionary concept: “little hand-painted people, left in London to tend for themselves.”

The result? See for yourself with the spectacular images below. Who is behind these lovely creations? He or she wishes to remain anonymous. The only thing we can learn about Little People’s creator is that he or she has another blog celebrating a similar concept of art.

Historvius – Out-of-the-Box Guide for Tourist Sites

Historvius – Some travelers strive to be the antithesis to traditional tourists, seeking rarely visited, off the beaten path sites around the world, avoiding famous sites and the crowds at all costs. But that doesn’t mean famous sites have become overrated. On the contrary, international tourist sites such as Egypt’s pyramids or the huge man-shaped statues of Easter Island are still on my to-visit list, and the fact that many people flock these places each year is not about to deter me from doing so.

Historvius is a wonderful information place on mainstream (and less known) tourist sites worldwide, offering a super cool platform for learning more on your next sought-after site (note that you won’t be able to find info on cities per se, rather only on attraction sites). Start your site search by selecting your vacation destination, or choose a time period you are interested in as a filter, or, if yo wish, search by historical figure. There is also an open search for those interested. I had a specific site in mind I wanted to learn more about when I gave Historvius a try, and I enjoyed it tremendously. The photo below is a hint. Click it to get to the site’s page.

Totally Cool Pix – News Photos that will Leave You Speechless

Totally Cool Pix – The Weekly Blog winner from earlier this month made it to last week’s Weekly Faves collection, and for an evidently good reason. Totally Cool Pix is an amazing resource of phenomenal photography, capturing compelling, surprising and inspiring photos from around the world showing current affairs and news in image form. The anonymous creators of Totally Cool Pix select only the absolute best photographs out there, offering semi-professionals to submit their work in exchange for $100-$150, and proper credit on the site.

To explore the visual wonders of Totally Cool Pix, I suggest starting with the two photo galleries, Top Pictures of 2010 Part 1 and Part 2. Please note that some photos show graphic images of real people, but then again, the true power of story telling often entails such depictions. Below I have included a beautiful photo* by Adam Hunger I found on Totally Cool Pix which he had taken for Reuters, showing what Black Friday was like for many of Americans last month.

ShelterPop – Another AOL Blog Gem, This Time for the Home

ShelterPop – Another great blog from AOL Lifestyle, ShelterPop is here to make your home and everything within it, as wonderful as possible. The blog offers ideas, inspirations and how-to’s in numerous categories, including per-room suggestions, famous homes, design & architecture, storage & cleaning, gardening, fun stuff (crafts, parties, etc.), experts and video.

Like all Aol’s other blogs, it’s really fun to explore the various content offered on ShelterPop. Each section is armed with the right amount of images and commentary to persuade you to do something at home. My favorite post on ShelterPop is 8 Easy Bathroom Updates on a Budget.
