Crop The Block showcases the best short films and filmmakers that Berlin and Paris have to offer.
Great Films, Block by Block.
Crop The Block is a website that displays films created by the vibrant filmmaking communities in Paris and Berlin. Each city has its own page embedded within the site. On each of those pages, a map of the respective city is displayed. Plotted out across the maps are various dots, each of which corresponds to a unique film. If you click on one of the dots, a Vimeo video player pops up, and you can watch the film directly through the site. There’s also the option to sort through all of the videos individually. A huge collective of international filmmakers creates content for Crop The Block, and each of them brings a unique approach to storytelling and filmmaking. The filmmakers are also available for hire for other production needs.
Keep it Local.
Each of the videos embedded on Crop The Block was created by a local filmmaker or group of filmmakers from either Paris or Berlin. The films all demonstrate local aspects of the city. One of the films on the Paris site, for instance, showcases the “Chateau Rouge” area of the city. The film features shots of the streets and interviews with the diverse group of residents. All of the interviewees speak in French but the films are subtitled in English. Some of the films, such as Kevin Rumley’s “Oberbaumbrücke” film on the Berlin page, have more of a narrative to them and are more dramatic than documentary-style. Still, they creatively display various parts of the city in ways much more entertaining than walking around on Google Maps. I highly recommend checking out Crop The Block to get a true sense of the great cities of Paris and Berlin as well as to see work by incredible filmmakers.
