Awkward is an iOS app  that allows users to watch and record anonymous video confessions. The confessions are anonymous because each user’s face is blurred via the app, making it easier to be more truthful in whatever you say to the camera. Users can also set their own level of blurriness, deciding to disguise themselves as virtually unrecognizable or to keep most of the original camera’s clarity intact. The video confessions are also limited to a short time span at 10 seconds each. The intention of the app is that users will share their most awkward, funny, personal stories with the online community without fear of negative backlash.

Because Awkward‘s platform is so simple, users can technically use it to say whatever they want. Many of the confessions hosted on the app do contain some awkward stories, though. Some of the videos included in the site’s promotional video, for instance, include the blurry confession of a woman who claims she just “went #2” in a public bathroom before discovering there is no toilet paper. It’s easy to upload and share your own confession via the site, and each post is supported by the community via the option to “vote” for a clip. The more votes a video receives, the more likely it is to be seen by other users. The app was created by developers in Berlin, and the idea that thousands of individuals could be sharing their funniest, most embarrassing stories anonymously together is an appealing one.
