Indego Africa is a nonprofit social enterprise & lifestyle brand supporting women artisans in Rwanda through economic empowerment and education.
Indego Africa is a non-profit organization that seeks to provide female artisans in Rwanda with the tools and support necessary to allow them to become successful independent businesswomen. The site carries out its mission by partnering with Rwandan artisans to sell their handcrafted product through Indego Africa’s own e-commerce site. 100% of the profits made from products hosted on the site are returned to the Rwandan community, used to fund education and employment training programs for the women who created the products. The artisans that work with Indego Africa come from a variety of the country’s many cooperatives. The organization works with a total of 18 different artisan groups, employing more than 600 women who support more than 2,200 children and other dependents.
There is a huge variety of products hosted on Indego Africa. Many items would be appealing with or without the social impact offered by Indego Africa, but the fact that the organization is doing such good work can make you feel better about the purchases you make through the site. Because the items are all hand-made, there’s a large amount of jewelry and accessories — all with exquisite detail. There are also clothes and tons of other products available via the site’s e-commerce store. The prices tend to be higher than usual, but, again, you know that your money is being sent to a good cause. Indego Africa also determines the prices of products on an item-by-item basis, taking into consideration the cost of living for a woman in Rwanda, the hourly wage for creating the item, as well as the costs associated with selling and shipping the item in the U.S. If you don’t want to make a purchase but still want to get involved, it’s also incredibly easy to make a quick donation via the site.
