Making All Art Accessible
Like the Internet’s best companies, Artsy has a specific, clearly defined goal: “to make all the world’s art accessible to anyone with an Internet connection.”
Connecting Art History
If Artsy didn’t already seem overly ambitious, they’re also currently working on something called the Art Genome Project. Like the Human Genome Project, this undertaking aims to map the varying characteristics, including art movements, artists, and styles, that connect art and artists throughout history. Many of the works catalogued via the Art Genome Project are available for viewing through the site, but not for purchase. While this may seem like a limitation of the site, it’s actually one of Artsy’s advantages. The company truly believes in fostering an online community dedicated to art, and the ability to view and/or purchase pieces through the site strengthens and reinforces that community. All of the art on the site is easily discoverable through filters such as price, color, size and medium, the latter of which ranges from film/video to sculpture and painting. Artsy recognizes all art forms as art, and encourages users to learn more about varying artforms in addition to making purchases and adding to their collections. The site truly fills the need for a premier, non-exclusive online destination for the discussion and sale of fine art.
