Posted on Tuesday, September 11th, 2012 by

PolitiFact helps you find the truth in American politics. If you’re looking to fact-check your representatives to see if they stand by their election-eve promises, here’s the place to do it…

What is PolitiFact?

PolitiFact is a blessed project of the Tampa Bay Times that helps you find the truths in American politics. This project fact-checks statements by members of Congress, the White House, lobbyists and interest groups and rates them on a Truth-O-Meter.

The indicator varies from:

True – The statement is accurate and there’s nothing significant missing;

Mostly True – The statement is accurate but needs clarification or additional information;

Half True – The statement is partially accurate but leaves out important details or takes things out of context;

Mostly False – The statement contains an element of truth but ignores critical facts, giving a false impression;

False – The statement is not accurate; and

‘Pants on fire’ – The statement is not accurate and makes a ridiculous claim!

Is your Congressman worth your vote?

PolitiFact are also tracking campaign promises of President Barack Obama and Republicans in Congress. You can track the progress on the Obameter and the GOP Pledge-O-Meter on these links. PolitiFact’s editor, Bill Adair, tells us this of his site’s function: “We are a fact-checking site that holds politicians and pundits accountable for their words. In the past, they could usually say anything they wanted. But now, we research their claims and rate them on our Truth-O-Meter from True to our lowest rating Pants on Fire.”

Democracy Watchdogs!

We all believe in democracy and transparency of actions and deeds of the people we voted for, Projects such as PolitiFact puts a mirror in front of the public figures we elect and shows us if they stand behind their words and promises to us. In today’s world every politician has a media consultant that guides their every step.

They tell them what the public would like to hear and what they should to get elected. Check out PolitiFact and see if the politician you voted for had a true ideology behind the words they said, or just said what you wanted to hear so they will get the desired job!
