The idea behind The Arcanum is that students should learn art through a one-on-one Master/Apprentice relationship, rather than in a school or by general online videos. The application process includes describing yourself, your learning style, which discipline you want to learn in, and goals along with adding a portfolio of your work. After applying to The Arcanum, you will be placed on the waiting list until a Master chooses to take you on as an Apprentice. This process may take a while due to the fact that each Master can only have 20 Apprentices. Applying and being on the waiting list is free, but the website will cost you $29.97 per month once you are accepted by a Master. In order to utilize The Arcanum, you must have a Google+ account, as your interaction with your Master and your Master’s other Apprentices takes place in Google+ groups.
Apprentices learn their photography by working their way 20 levels with their Masters. Each Apprentice begins on Level 1, but works their way through the levels at their own pace. The Master’s job is to make sure you are moving along (again, at your own pace), to remind you what is coming next, and to critique you. The Arcanum is trying to get artists back to the old school method of apprenticeships. It is a great method for photographers of all levels to learn and be motivated by people who are of higher skill than they are. Another great feature of the website is that you can work on your own time so you do not need to quit a job or life to go to school full time. At $29.97 a month, ($360/year), it will not break the bank like a regular art school would, but it is more focused and motivating than traditional online tutorials. The Arcanum is a great choice for anyone wishing to learn and improve on the art of photography.
