Rewind: The World’s First Radio Time Machine

Rewind is an app that curates radio station playlists based on a specific season and year.

Rewind Your Radio to a Specific Time

Rewind was designed in order to allow listeners an easier way to find music from a specific place and time. The app markets itself as “the world’s first radio time machine,” and that’s a fairly accurate assessment of its capabilities. The site directs listeners to various radio stations organized around a particular season, year or decade. There are playlists for “Winter 1965,” for instance, or “Summer 1995.” When you click on one of those options, the site begins playing back the music that could have been heard on the radio during that time frame. That limits the selection to popular songs, but it does make for a nice, nostalgic listening experience (or a lesson in music history, depending on the time period you select).

Save and Organize your Music as “Moments”

Rewind is also limited by its selection of music, as it is powered by Rdio. Of course, Rdio has thousands of songs from decades of music history, so there are plenty of options for variety. The app also includes a feature called “Moments” that allows users to create playlists that correspond with a particular time and place, or a landmark moment in a person’s history. Whether we’re aware of it or not, music is constantly serving as the backdrop to events that take place in our lives. Listening back to songs that you enjoyed at a particular moment in your life can have the powerful effect of bringing back certain feelings and memories. It’s also just cool to be able to organize your songs by time, a feature often overlooked by other music services.
