PlayAlong for a Good Cause
PlayAlong is an online experiment that has the goal of raising money for childhood education to promote literacy throughout the world. The site, which essentially hosts a trivia game, was build by the Collaborative Fund, which helps finance popular sites like Kickstarter, Codeacademy and Reddit. PlayAlong was created in collaboration with Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit behind Sesame Street as well as several childhood education charities. The site is designed to mimic the child-like aesthetic popularized by shows such as Sesame Street. There are even several Sesame Street characters, such as Cookie Monster, that make an appearance as you navigate the site.
Answer Questions, Raise Money for Charity
The entire PlayAlong site is designed as a simple trivia game, with “true or false” questions. The site promises to donate one cent to child education charity organizations with each correct answer. This is an approach similar to FreeRice, the long-operating website that donates 10 grains of rice to help end world hunger with each correct answer chosen on the game. Like FreeRice, it’s fun to play PlayAlong, and you can feel satisfied that your trivia answers have some social impact (if you get them right). If you miss an answer to a question, PlayAlong displays the correct answer and also gives you a short history of why that answer is correct. This makes using the site a learning experience as well as a fun and charitable one.
