Sound Ecology: Explore the Sounds that Surround You

Sound Ecology is a web documentary that examines the growing problem of noise pollution, against the backdrop of our inability to tolerate silence.

Have you ever Heard The Sound of Silence?

Sound Ecology was created with a hope to contribute to an environment that lets people develop their powers of perception and contemplation. In a world where silence is sometimes seen as a cause of anxiety, there is often to little time for such contemplation. Becoming at ease with silence (and with sounds) is no easy matter, but it is a fascinating adventure that will let you discover a whole new landscape one moment, and a whole new perception of the world the next. This site was created by the National Film Board of Canada, who turned from their films associated agenda to deal with this important issue.

Lets Talk about Acoustic Ecology…

Acoustic ecology plays the same role for noise control that science in general does for environmental movement: it provides a common language and confers legitimacy. The soundscapes presented in Sound Ecology are, of course, artificial. The real soundscapes are the ones in which we actually live, as we walk through the street or sit in our office. This site invites you to use it’s interactive features to learn to identify the thousands of sounds to which you will be exposed when you turn off your screen and venture out into a real soundscape in the real world. Take ten minutes off your day and explore the world of the Acoustic ecology, the sounds and the silence.
