Off the Screen and Onto the Streets
How many times have you been asked to “support” an organization or campaign through social media, only to forget it when you see your friend posted new cat pictures? Causes began as a social action platform on Facebook to help non-profits and others gain attention by having invitations pop-up next to friend requests or events. The founders of Causes saw that millions of people were willing to click to support organizations like “Save the Whales,” but how many of those users actually made an impact? It turns out, a click matters for very little. Their new website attempts to turn these “clicktivists” into activists.
Connect with others by Setting Yourself Apart
You nod and smile when your Teva-flaunting friend gets on his soapbox about the “GMO devils” and “fracking,” but what do these buzzwords really mean? At Causes you can find issues that pique your interests, or, allow yourself to get swept up by the excitement of grass-roots campaigns. Stay on top of current events by educating yourself on social activism. There is also a social element to Causes; your personal page will reflect your activity whenever you “pledge” support, or donate to a fund. After all, grass-roots is all about wearing your passion on your sleeve. Your friends can see what you care about, and hopefully they will be inspired as well.
