Animated Jazz Band – Mix’em up but Keep it Cool

jazzband Animated Jazz Band – How does instrumental music that is both intricate and harmonious come to life? It’s quite simple; the composer writes or composes music notes for each respective instrument, and the players translate those notes into sounds, working together to form a music compilation.

But you know what? There’s even an easier method than what I just described, and it even gives way to super fun free-styling: The Animated Jazz Band is a 9-member band, consisting of singers and various instrument players such as a drummer, a pianist, a guitarist and even a synthesizer player, just to name a few. Clicking on each member prompts an additional theme, creating a more complex melody that’s soothing and enjoyable. Drums please!

Magnets – Opposites Attract

magnets MagnetsYour goal is to lead the blue or red particles out from the Spawn Boxes to the Receive Boxes. Place the magnets correctly to direct the particles, then hit “Start” to see what happens! For more Weekly Games, make sure you check back every Wednesday. On a side note, as a child I was fascinated with magnets and I used to play a lot with them. This online game really took me down Memory Lane, which prompt the videos below…

AllMyFaves Brazil – Ordem e Progresso Indeed

AMFbrazil AllMyFaves Brazil – Not a lot of people know this, but the Brazilian flag entails the Country’s national motto, Ordem e Progresso (“Order and Progress”). The reason I’m telling you this is that for the past two months my desktop has been embellished with this gorgeous green flag of the Land of Samba. The funny thing is, ordem e progresso goes hand in hand with the All My Faves manifesto – offering an organized and progressive platform for search and discovery on the Web. To make a long story short, our devoted team of researchers and developers toiled these past couple of months over the new homepage for Brazil. The result? See for yourself. Creating the Brazil homepage was made in the exact same way we built all our different pages, including the AMF pages for the US, Canada, UK and India; we selected sites based on their usefulness, friendliness, technology, design, unobtrusiveness and popularity.

So if you are from Brazil, I’m sure you’ll find this resource very useful since it answers all your online daily needs, with the added bonus of inviting you to explore many other brilliant sites. Despite our efforts to make this homepage as encompassing as humanly possible, we may have left out a particular website you feel is essential. In that case, drop us a line. I also invite all non-Brazilian users to drop by and see AMF’s newest vibrant addition.

As a tribute to Brazil, I have listed below two of my favorite Brazilian songs, The Girl from Ipanema and Lambada. I had a hard time pinning down a version for the first song; I found so many excellent options on YouTube. In the end, I narrowed it down to two versions, a Sinatra & Jobim take, and another from the 1964 film “Get Yourself a College Girl.” By the way, if you are interested in the story behind this song, click here.

Books of Odds – Everyday Odds

bookofodds Book of Odds – Back in 1982, we used to live in Washington D.C. Naturally, I was a kid at the time, but I still remember the tragedy of the crash of Air Florida Flight 90 that year. A couple of months later, my parents took me and my sister on a cruise, at the end of which we had to take a flight back to D.C. As we were waiting at the gate, I noticed an Air Florida plane approaching. At this point I realized we were about to board a plane which is exactly the same as the one that had crashed. When I confronted my parents, they adopted the probability approach to reassure me and my sister. “The odds of this plane crashing today are slim to none,” my father said. Seen as I am alive and well today, I guess he was right… It’s funny how the worst tragedies and best things that could happen to you boil down to simple numbers.

Speaking of odds and probabilities, the Book of Odds is a brilliant site that “contains hundreds of thousands of Odds Statements, from the odds of being the only one to survive a plane crash, to the odds of having a heart attack, to the odds of having ever eaten cold pizza for breakfast. Book of Odds not only allows you to search for the odds and chances that concern or interest you the most, but also to understand probability by comparing the odds of unfamiliar events to others you have personally experienced.” Delve into the fascinating world of chances, odds and probabilities while skipping the boring math lectures.

MySkyStatus – How you doin’?

myskystatus MySkyStatus – If update is your middle name, you’re most probably heavily engaged in changing your Facebook status and tweeting more than three times a day. That’s great – it keeps everyone you know updated with… whatever it is you want them to know. But what happens when real-time updates are compromised by say, a flight, or god forbid, a flight longer than 8 hours?

Thanks to Lufthansa Airlines, now you can kiss those long hour hiatus periods goodbye and release those important micro-blogging messages, airborne style, regardless of your flight’s carrier. Lufthansa’s service, MySkyStatus “sends altitude, location, departure and arrival updates automatically to your Facebook and Twitter pages.” All you need is to update your flight number and departure date, and MySkyStatus will do the rest for you. Now only one important question remains: chicken or beef?

A Billion for a Billion – Help Feeding the Hungry through Feeds and More

wfp A Billion for a Billion – According to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFF), “For the first time in human history, the number of hungry people worldwide will exceed one billion.” If this number strikes you as utterly disturbing as well, you should know there are many things you can do to help, especially in and through our social networking environment. You can start by using our god given web 2.0 applications to spread the word – click here for the various options available. In addition, donating always goes a long way, even if it’s a frugal contribution. Think about it, if every online user donates 25 cents, it will add up to a heck of a lot of $$$ that could beat one of the 21st century’s most pressing issues – hunger.

Worldwide hunger is something that concerns us at AllMyFaves, and we want to help out wherever possible. That is why we’re committed to spreading the word through our blog, the AMF facebook fan page, and also via our Weekly Faves. In addition, we made a donation as a company. By the way, the slogan of the WFF campaign is Fill the Cup – another marketing tactic they’re using, and quite justly, through celebrities. Below are some photos of celebrities helping out. Now it’s your turn.

Dump – Embracing the Bizarre and Funny

dump Dump – According to the Urban Dictionary, the word ‘dump’ refers to an activity (or the product thereof) one would avoid performing in public. Nevertheless, dump.com, despite its somewhat provocative name, is a wonderful fun station of weird, hilarious and interesting pics and videos, updated on a daily basis. The great part about this site is that Dump is “100% family friendly,” meaning you won’t find any sexual, racist or other inappropriate language and/or visuals here. Below are some of my faves. Enjoy!

My Parents Were Awesome – ‘Parents’ and ‘Cool’ CAN be in the Same Sentence

myparents My Parents Were Awesome – Although you may find it hard to believe, before you were born your parents had a life. They dressed fashionably, occasionally got drunk and maybe even went skinny dipping – to sum it up, they were young. My Parents Were Awesome is a place that gives you (the son/daughter) the stage for showing how awesome your parents were. So dig up your parents’ old photos and brag about just how cool they were.

I did a ‘once around the block’ looking at submitted photos of other users’ parents. I must admit, it’s quite interesting; I came across cool once-young-now-not-so-much pictures from the 60s, 70s, even 80s. I loved the concept of this website. My only comment is that they could have offered a ‘before and after’ photo face-off to spice things up a little. To see what I mean, see the pictures below. Wouldn’t you be interested to see these folks’ current pictures? I would.

Halloween 2009 – Get your Holiday Horror Fix

AMFhalloween Halloween 2009 – A couple of months ago, we launched All My Faves’ personalization tool in private beta (request an invite here). If this is news to you, you should know that it’s a place where you can create your very own logo based homepage with your selection of favorite websites, essentially replacing your bookmarks. Having that said, it’s not the only thing you can do with our Mini Faves. Use this service as an effective marketing tool where you can showcase your portfolio, work samples, clients, or anything else you feel is important – all free of charge.

In order to provide you with a concrete example, we’ve created a Halloween Mini Faves ‘user,’ a one-stop shop (and experience) for all your Halloween needs. Here you’ll find logos with direct links to popular online costume stores and special outfits of high profile stars and heroes such as Harry Potter, Michael Jackson, and even sexy costumes for women who are interested. Apart from costumes, we also listed Halloween crafts and recipes, and also a little something to get you into the horror atmosphere Halloween is known for. Tweak Today – Mission Pleasantly Possible

tweaktoday Tweak Today – Whenever I hear the words assignment, mission or task, my initial reaction is more often than not an “oh boy” one. But Tweak Today takes these intimidating nouns and makes them utterly entertaining and inspiring. It is a site where “the idea is that users rally behind a simple mission every day, and submit photos, videos, or “tweets” about it.” Here are two examples of already accomplished missions: show your favorite pair of shoes and post a picture of a book you started and never finished. These missions are all about fun and sharing.

I really enjoyed this website, and had a great time going through the various Missions Accomplished. Plus, the best part about Tweak Today is that they make participation easy – adding your tweak along with a picture or video is an intuitive piece of cake. Another cool feature they offer is suggesting a mission, and if enough people like it, it may be posted as the daily mission. Help my mission idea become an actual task by casting your vote on What’s the best ‘Monday’ song? My personal favorite is the one below.

Beds Are Burning – It’s Time for Climate Justice

bedsareburning Beds Are Burning – ‘Beds Are Burning‘ is originally a 1987 hit single by the Australian rock band Midnight Oil which was originally a political song about Pintupi’s (Australian Aboriginal group) repatriation of ancestral lands. Click here for the full story. Today, ‘Beds are Burning’ is yet again in the center of a hot topic, this time manifested in its new cover version – the ‘Dry River Bed’ – having different lyrics and acting as a global music petition. If you haven’t figured out what this is about yet, we’re talking (and they’re signing) about global warming and climate change.

The new version features celebrities from around the world who are urging us and the world to take the global climate issue seriously. The song is available for free download, and each download automatically prompts the addition of the listener to the list of supporters. In addition to downloading the song, users have an additional participation option; clicking on the “Tck Tck Tck, Time for Climate Justice” link redirects users to a page where they can video record themselves saying “Tick.” The large numbers of Tickers will, as this campaign hopes, have a powerful and persuasive impact on the world’s leaders who will convene this coming December in Copenhagen, in order to formulate a robust and fair replacement for the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.
