Google Picasa Scares the S#%t Out of Me

At the moment of writing this, Google Chrome is all the hype around the net. Though, at the same day that Google Chrome launched, Google also launched a new version of their popular Picasa and PicasaWebAlbums. Which is considered as one of the top destination for image uploading on the Internet. I don’t believe that the launch of this two services together happened by a chance. Google knew that all the hype will be around the new Google browser. No one seems to mention anything thoughtful regarding the new face recognition that they launched.

First, I would like to introduce you to the new service. When you login to your Picasa web account. You get an option at the right bar of the screen to perform name tagging. Which at first seems to be harmless. We all know the face tagging done on Facebook. In which you personally recognize your friends and tag them with a name, thus, an algorithm isn’t used to scan additional pictures.

Google Picasa is different. When selecting the name tag option, you receive a message stating that you have to wait for about half an hour until all your pictures are processed. Once processed, you will be able to view all your loved ones grouped together in a beautiful way which only Google can provide. So slick and simple.

So what scares me… You’re asking? Well, Google’s main business model is through advertising. Google controls most of the Internet advertising market, it’s their main business and frankly they perform it unexceptionally. In addition, Google is also trying to infiltrate the old-school media TV and Newspapers. (You can read more about it here and here).

Did you ever stop and think what will happen if Google will find a way to show us ads on our daily routine. On our way to work, while shopping or just hanging out with friends at a local bar.

I think that the day which Google will shows us ads on the streets is closer than we think. Now, that they are able to recognize our faces. All they need is a camera to recognize us on the street. Oh, guess what!? They already have it!

What will happen when Google will have all the information about us? Isn’t that too much power for one company?

When Gmail started reading our mail and showing us relevant ads. There was a big privacy fuss around the issue. Now, when it comes to recognizing us in person, it seems as if no one is raising up these issues.

At first, Tagging yourself on Picasa seems harmless, but think about what will happen ten years from today. Privacy won’t exist when stepping out of your home.

I am a big Google fanboy. I even believe that I will try their new tagging option because I am way too curious. I also believe in Google’s moto – “Don’t be evil”. Though, we have to raise these issues before it is too late. We should have control over our privacy.

Am I just being paranoid or is this our future?

See The Difference You Can Make – Earth Hour

dailygreen The Daily Green – The Daily Green is a great green website for regular people. It emphasizes the importance of being Green but it isn’t dramatic and that is exactly what the people need in order to be more green. Mahatma Gandhi said “Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent then the one derived from fear of punishment.” The Daily Green comes with a lot of love, showing us how to be greener by useful tips, organic food recipes and cool articles – Will Brad Pitt Become a Green Movie Star Mayor? Lets try and be a bit greener with a smile, before enforcement will be required.

ConsolesClash of the Consoles – Game consoles contain toxic chemicals and can contribute to the massive growth of electronic waste that’s often dumped, causing widespread environmental pollution and health problems. The game consoles manufacturers can help the environment by taking the following steps: 1. Clean up their products by eliminating hazardous substances. 2. Takeback and recycle their products responsibly once they become obsolete. So which console do you own? Write your console manufacturer a letter – Dear Mr Satoru Iwata (Nintendo), Dear Mr Ballmer (Microsoft), Dear Sig. Stringer (Sony). You can make a change!

Free Rice FreeRice – A great vocabulary quiz-game. Play it and realize how many you’ve forgotten since you left school. Also, for each right answer, give grains of rice to end world hunger. Great Game. Great Cause.

Go ahead. Change the world.

Do The Green Thing Do The Green Thing – Who said that being green should be a hassle, make it fun. BigThinkBig Think – The Internet is an amazing medium. Though, sometimes it seems as if everything on the internet is about stupid people doing stupid stuff. Big Think is on track to change it all by harnessing the power of thinking. The site allows users to debate stories of the day and questions put forward by experts in a given subject. Members can also submit “ideas” to the site to be critiqued and rated. Subjects discussed differ from science and technology on to faith and beliefs. Big Think aims to be a central location for all thinking minds. How do you think the bible should be interpreted?

FirebrandFirebrand – As I see it, TV commercials can be divided in to two kinds. 95% of them are a big nuisance and should be neglected by zapping to other channels or visiting the toilet. The remaining 5 % are worth dying for. Firebrand has taken the mission to provide us with the later. Watch the best TV commercials (in TV quality) arranged by companies and packed in a great interface. My fave commercial is the Sony Balls. Let me know what is yours?

ShelfariShelfari – Tell me who your friends are and I will tell you who you are. This ancient saying is also true when it comes to book choices – Tell me which books you are reading and I will introduce you to more books you might like. Free Your Buddy Walkthrough

Inside your Messenger lives a guy named Buddy. A green faced icon. Buddy entered our lives as part of Microsoft’s marketing campaign promoting Microsoft Mobile.

free your buddy

For the campaign, Microsoft launched a cute little quest game called Free Your Buddy. The objective is to free Buddy from within your desktop on to a “brighter” future. (Personally, I feel a little chained with my mobile).

Buddy’s fate is all in your hands. You are able to send buddy to different missions within his small room, in hope that they will set him free. Interaction with Buddy is done by typing orders into messenger like interface. Move your mouse over the objects on screen to know what orders you can give to Buddy.

Unfortunately, Buddy isn’t that smart. Getting him to understand you can take a while. Therefore, we came to your help with a quick Free Your Buddy Walkthrough.

So, first of all, give it a try, don’t give up!

If you do, come back here to unveil a piece of the puzzle. Free Your Buddy.

Trust me, it’s much more enjoyable when you do it yourself. I enjoyed it, let me know if you did as well.

This is a flash animation, so all you RSS/Email readers of Allmyfaves will have to click through in order to enjoy this.

Donate a mammogram, It will only cost you a click! – The Breast Cancer Site

breastBreast cancer is the fifth most common cause of cancer death. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2007, 178,480 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,460 die. One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In addition, 2,030 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 450 will die this year.

So how can you help? How can you make a difference?

Your click on the “Click Here to Give – it’s FREE” button helps fund free mammograms for women in need — low-income, inner-city and minority women whose awareness of breast cancer and opportunity for help is often limited. Your click is paid for by site sponsors, and mammogram funding is provided to clinics throughout the U.S. through the efforts of the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Be nice. Visit the Breast Cancer Site.

Once there you may choose to click on some more causes in order to donate: Animal rescue, Rainforest, Hunger, Literacy and Child health.

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” –

Doof Logo Gaming and social networks are both hugely time consuming when it comes to the web. takes both of these concepts and puts them together. doof is a new social playground in which everyone can play casual flash based games while socializing with friends and sharing their thoughts and experiences.

Everyone at doof has their own profile, avatar, guestbook, blog, photo-album, instant messenger, statistics and a friends list. Stand out from the crowd by customizing your doof world and expressing yourself for the whole community to see.

doof gives you the familiar desktop experience with a beautiful Flash based UI. The design is very intuitive and there are a lot of designing options to choose from. As you can see above i chose the relaxing view of the ocean. You can upload any picture you want or just select one from the default gallery. Themes are also available to select. You can also share your creation with the world using the ‘Publish doofSpace’ feature.

Games – Time to get addicted

Everyone loves games, and doof surely has plenty of that (44 as of this moment). The games are categorized by the typical game genres. Classics such as Asteroids and Space Invaders, puzzles, action, sports, shooting, racing and much more. Some of them are really quite addictive (Try not to kill yourself while base jumping on “Elite Base Jumper”).

While browsing the games you will come across a few familiar faces. You can find makeovers of populars like Bejeweled, Same, Zuma and Pong. My personal favorites are: Golden Arrow, Gem Swap, Hammer Throw and Cascade.

The thing that makes doof such a great experience for me is the game window. You get much more then just playing the game. On this window you can view a few basic stats about yourself, see a progress curve of your gaming, how you position compare on the global ranking and medals that you have won. This fact really makes you want to soak in the skills and grab all the medals.

Doof Screenshot

As well as just playing a quick game you can join a tournament. Tournaments cost you doof credits. You receive 10 credits when you sign up, these credits can be earned by winning or by buying more credits with PayPal or Credit Card transaction. On tournament modes you bet your hard earned credits based on the skills you have against another opponent in the same game. The winner is the opponent with most of the points.

doof credits have high addicting potential. As of now, you can only buy gifts for your friends (beer, blow-up dolls, diamond rings) but as doof develops expect to see many more features to use with the credits you earn.

Except for the basic ‘wall writing’ we are all familiar from with from our favorite social network, doof enables you as well to IM with your friends, send them mail, share doofSpaces, send gifts and even integrate your Facebook photo albums.

A nice touch which i found to be quite lovely is the news tracker. Choose your news provider and see the headlines scroll at the bottom of the screen.

doof surely looks to be a great promise in the world of social gaming. If you are a flash game enthusiast head on over and sign up. Keep in mind that doof is still in it’s early stages and even at this stage they’re definitely worthy of your time. Enjoy. (If you win a few credits, send over a beer 😉 ).

Are you artistic or logic – Maybe both…

Look at the dancer below. What do you see? Is she turning clockwise or counter-clockwise? You just can’t help but love these optical illusions.

If you see her turning clockwise (right) then your left side of the brain is doing most of the work, which means you are more of a logic/analyzing person.

If you see the dancer turning counter-clockwise (left) then your right side of the brain is in charge, this means you are the artistic/intuition person.

You control the way the dancer turns. Try looking at this with a few more people and see how everyone sees it different.
