This Is Sand offers a realistic way to create digital sandscapes. Like a true sandscape, the process of creating your own takes time and patience. As you click on the gray screen of the browser, sand of a certain color (which can be easily changed), falls to the bottom. You can be as creative as you want during the process, creating a design or simply making a palette of colors. Even though it’s such a simple concept, it’s fun to test your creativity within the boundaries of the sites rules. It’s almost easier to create the sandscapes via This Is Sands’ mobile app, as you can tap the screen to let the sand fall.

When you finish a sandscape, you can share it with the rest of the site’s community. Users can also browse through sandscapes created by others via three categories: “Popular This Week,” “Popular Today,” and Latest In.” Some of the popular sandscapes are incredibly inventive, featuring intricate depictions of faces or buildings. I’m not sure how people have the talent or patience to make such detailed sandscapes, but they’re definitely cool to see. The entire site is a great mix of design and creativity, with users building a form of art together online.
