The Andy Warhol Art Exchange is an initiative created by Swedish vodka company Absolut. Despite its corporate marketing intentions, the site actually has an extremely interesting take on the world of digital art. The site asks users to submit or create their own piece of digital artwork. In exchange, users receive a different piece of artwork from another artist that uploaded his or her work to the site. The art is randomly selected from another participant in the exchange, so you could be receiving artwork from a user anywhere in the world with a unique skill set (which could, of course, be good or bad). Most of the time it’s good, though.

It may sound easy to create art online, but many of the work that’s been uploaded to Art Exchange is unusually creative and inspiring. After receiving the artwork that’s sent to you in return for your own creation, you can download the image and share it easily with your friends. The entire initiative also automatically enters users into a competition to win an original Andy Warhol polaroid photograph. The most interesting aspect of the entire site is that exchanges are made at specific dates, allowing users to spend time working on something worthwhile. It’s an important exchange of artistic creativity online, something that will hopefully be mimicked by other sites or continued outside of its current form as a promotional campaign.
